Here too is another fisherman and many times view the boat as just another fishing tool. A means to an end as it were. I as a fisherman also see many others of us that seem to disregard the rules, especially tourney boats. At the same time I don't see as much of a problem with the jets as I do the skiers. They rate right up there with the tourney boats. As I've said before I don't need the ski show when I'm trying to relax quietly. And when they pass so close that I can read the label on their swim suit, well!!!!

I love the guy who likes to fish right outside the 4 ball while we are using the course. He gets wet occasionally

I really haven't had too many issues with jet skis. The worst I see is really young people...like somewhere in their early teens going faster than the conditions/proximity of other boats allows for. I'm hoping to pick one or two of them up myself.

As they should, no argument here. It's a big lake, no need to be coming up my transom either! Want to come and run me off the lake, fine. I know where the running lanes are also and I sure know how to get in the middle of it if need be. And have learned to be just as rude.

BTW these folks are not on a ski course. Though they seem to believe the whole lake is THEIR ski course.

Jet skis are ok as long as they stay about 100 yards AWAY from my boat.

I am torn between closing this thread for bashing, and adding to the bashing... Maybe I'll do both..

Most jet ski 's get a bad rap because of who (jet ski's) they are attracted to, usually first time water toy buyers, just because they are less costly. And let's face it, they tend to be a younger persons type of water activity. I like being on the water, not really "in" it. And along with just those two factors, you will get a less experienced boater. Sure not an excuse, but it does help the understanding of why.

The only problem I have with jet skis is proximity. If I am drifting and bottom bouncing or anchored and casting, and the lake is 90 miles long. Why do they need to do "tricks" right beside my boat?
I know they need an audience, but a dude in his 40's fishing peacfully isn't the target audience!

I have often wondered the same thing only I'll again add water skiers. If I wanted to see a show I'd go into town on Wed and Sat nights and watch the professionals do it. And they do put on quite a show!!!

I would agree with that. Also it seams people in wake board boats like to do the same thing. I can't remember the amount of times I have been in a cove only to have one of those come along and disrupt my quiet evening/morning on an empty lake.

The biggest issue with lake lice is they can be rented rather cheaply. I don't know how much training beyond "here's how you start it and give it full throttle", and "go this way very fast, if something gets in your way, turn" there is, but I doubt very much. Renters are probably just handed a water rules guide.
One of the best upgrades I've done to a boat is installing a place diverter. Installed one on my last jetboat, and for some strange reason, the lake lice quit swarming a few feet behind me to hit my wake ...... If you time it right, you can knock the knucklehead off (worth 50pts!!).
Will be installing a place diverter on the CV23 next winter, after I finish rebuilding the 429 to a 500hp 460 and rebuild the pump this winter.
Then let the games begin .....

My nephews were out on the boat with me. I had complained about jet skies doing "Idiot Circles"
They thought I was just the "grumpy uncle" annoyed with one of their favorite water toys.
"What is an 'Idiot Circle' Uncle Ninja?"

Not a half hour into our lake ride, I had to chop throttle to keep from running over some kids on a ski.
As I shook off the near collision at idle, I just looked back at my nephews.

"Yeah, Uncle Ninja, we got it now. Idiot circles."

Re: i have no respect for jetski's

Fwiw we had a fatality in Lemon Bay last Sunday involving a jetski. Rental deck boat made a stb turn to enter Stump Pass, rental ski ran into & under it. Dude lost half his leg & mosta his blood. Died Monday.

Having said that, I've owned 'PWC' in the past. Not sure the particular vehicle is the problem. Appears to me the problems start when somebody takes the controls & doesn't pay attention.

Don't think it's fair to denigrate those who rent boats & skis. One'a my buddys is in the business. He pays a staggering amount for insurance. And he doesn't rent to just anyone. But people still tear up his stuff?

I agree, it's not the machine, it's the people.

Boat accidents are a routine occurance round here. Collisions, sinkings, drownings. All in a days work.

My philosophy is if'n I spy more than one rental in the immediate area? I run!

On the bright side only 1 Manatee was killed by a boat in Sarasota County last year. And we all know how important they are ...
