As many of you know I found a sweet looking Cobalt a few weeks back that turned out to be totally rotten and the owner was a scam artist. Well I have to say I got bit by the Cobalt bug and one kinda just fell in my lap.

This on is a 92 instead of an 89 and 22' vs 20', and looks to be in immaculate condition (other than needing a polish). The person that owns it is the second owner and it only has 182 actual hours. I am in the process of trying to find an inspector to go look at it, as the boat is 500 miles away from me.

The bad thing is the guy really does not know what to ask, and I am afraid to lowball, but I would like a get a decent deal. If the boat is perfect I do not mind paying a little more for it.

What would you guys offer?

Off the top of my head I am thinking between $8000 and $10,000, if it has solid floors and the motor comp tests at what the low hours say it should(nearly perfect), Tandem trailer, 22' boat decent motor what are your thoughts?

$10k would be the most he could probably get, $8k would prolly be fair, $5k would be lowball. I'd offer $6k :p

Pricing of used boats is very location and season dependant - in addition to how motivated the buyer & seller are. Your best bet is to look for comparable riggs locally via Boat Trader magazine and Trader on-line on the internet. A reasonable price for this rig in Colorado may have no meaning here in Florida.

Very good point about boat pricing. I was thinking 8000 to 8500.

I would offer 7000, and see what he says, 6 is an insult and 8 is probably retail. Cobalt is a good brand and you tend to pay a bit of a premium for them. Looks like it has been very well taken care of.

Looks like at some point it had an electric lift on the back bench seat, and now it is lying on the floor. may want to investigate that further.

Remember this boat is 19 years old too..

In my area i could see it selling for 6 to 7k....

Looking online the average retail on that boat in good condition is 7400 bucks.
Exceptional condition would be a little higher..

Can't really go much by book value on boats but that gives you a ball park figure...;)

If it were me i would offer 6k if everything checks out.

I am not sure how motivated this guy is. He said he just might wait until spring to sell it. He could just be playing a game, but I am not sure. He was referred to me from a friend that knew about the other cobalt I was looking at. So its kinda like walking up to a guy and saying "I want to buy your car". It was not for sale, but if the price is right he would sell it. I am going to talk with him on the phone today.

I had a lengthy conversation with the owner today, and I have a very good feeling about his. The boat is going to need some freshening as it has not been in the water since 2006. He has started it and winterized it every year, but never had time to use it. Being that it will need a tune up, new batteries and and good polish, he is willing to work with me on the price.

One thing he mentioned is a discoloring of the seat in the back on the sun deck. he said it turned pink. Is that just a mold, and can it be cleaned off?

I doubt that the seat turning pink has anything to do with mold so I would get an estimate to get it redone and use that in your initial offer.

Good Luck!!

The bad thing is we cannot make this happen until after the holidays. He travels for work and will be out of town most of the next two weeks. We are then at Christmas and no one wants to mess with this stuff around then. So I just hope that he does not change his mind between now and then. I have a feeling that we will be in the 7 grand mark.

The boat hasn't been in the water since 2006 and the owner's been starting and winterizing it ever since. The boat, as beautiful as it may be, is no more than a time consuming, dollar eating expense to the current owner. It looks to be in good to very good condition; but it obviously (by the pictures) hasn't been "Babied" in a long time. I would start a lot lower than 7000 deer; 5500 deer might be a good place to start. Good luck, and don't sweat it. It's a buyers market these days.

Safe and happy boating always!!!

Its a buyer market for sure, but when the buyer is on the fence, and really does not need to sell it, that makes it hard. You do not want to spook them off with a super low ball. Then you are left with your B@#@! in your hands. This is going to be a battle for sure. The wife is TOTALLY hooked on these cobalt boats.

The buyer's not on the fence, pal... He seems pretty psyched about this boat;). I know, I know... you meant the seller:D. The wife being hooked on Cobalt boats is awesome. You've got her behind you all the way and that's fantastic. You're the one who's been speaking to the seller. If your impression is that he'll be insulted by a low offer, than go with your gut. You did mention, though, that he'd be willing to work with you on the price. There are some flaws with the boat, as minor as they may be. I understand that it's 500 miles away; but you've got to go to the boat. Talk to the seller face to face while looking at the boat. Plan a fun weekend trip with your wife. Have a great time, and maybe bring home a beautiful boat, too. Again... Best of luck.

Safe and happy boating always!!!

While I understand that it is a buyers market, premium brands still command a bit of a premium price. I think 7K is fair for the year and size. The good news is that if you bring it home and perfect it like I am guessing you will, then it will probably be worth 7K for as long as you own it, which is a lot more than I can say for most boat purchases. People who know the brand will always pay more for it and as they get older and depreciate out, they tend to hit a value that really doesn't deteriorate unless you let it go to ell. I mean come on, a 22 foot boat with a 5.7L and a good relevant drive, 7K sounds like a good deal to me if it checks out structurally and mechanically. And you will be shocked with how smooth and stable the new boat feels compared to the one you have now.
