Re: I got taken : (

Ok .. just and update.

After sending pictures to the inspection facility, and to the shop owner.. they have agreed to refund me the full balance of the
inspection. I am how ever, still going to mail the manifold to them as RogersJet suggested to enjoy there new paper weights.

I have everything on order. I contacted a local marine shop and with a $750 in parts order coming, I should have everything I
need before I head back to the boat next , next weekend. Its being stored in a heated garage about 200 km from where I live.

New manifolds, gaskets, distributor cap, wires, plugs, and rotor. Im still looking for a timing gun.. lol.. I didn't realize how hard they
are to come by there days.

As for everyone's else's questions.
I bought the boat from a seller almost 2000 km's away from me. Cost me almost $700 in fuel just to get there and home
with the boat.Yes I did make sure to run new antifreeze through the lines before we brought it home. When we
hooked up the muffs to start it at home, a bunch of yellow crusty crap came out through the prop on the other end.
At first I didn't think much about it until I pulled the manifolds and found the same yellow crusty crap chipping away in between
the cracks. I did do an oil change and found no water or milky oil in the pan.

The suspected crack in the block is just above the freeze plugs and yes .. its maybe 1 or 2 cm's with no rust running down the
block. If anything, if it is a crack, it looks like it cracked out.

Here's the game plan... Get new manifolds installed. Get engine running right and tuned properly.
Install muffs again and run the engine for a while to inspect for any leaks in the block and recheck oil
for milk after.

As for the seller. With him being almost 2k in km's away from me and a province over... there's no point
even trying to re deal with him. Whats done is done. To much here say and speculation over the matter to
try and prove his negligence. I believe strongly in karma. If he screwed me and knew about it, Im sure
it will return to him in full swing. But I'm not going to dread about the boat now. Just get her fixed and learn from this whole
experience. The sun and summer are coming and I cant wait to be on the water.

I've made a list, checked it twice

lol.. let the project begin!

Ayuh,.... I'd sand/ grind it out, 'n epoxy it, while it's easier to get too,...
Before ya put the manifold back on...

I'd be looking for a different engine if yours is cracked. Why bother putting all of the new stuff on a junk engine? It will always be a failure point no matter how you "fix" it. You can't just walk to the service station if it lets loose.

Yeah. If it is cracked I think I will go that route, especially if its just an external leak. For this year anyways. Until I can absorb the cost of everything else. Even been looking in to that stitching. For a very small crack like that, should be an easier repair.

An engine swap is in the cards... But it will be a next winter project. Need to put all the new stuff on and run the motor to confirm it is in fact even leaking. When we ran it last weekend, I did not notice any water leaking from the block anywhere. Just the manifolds. There is also no rust trails leading off the block or the suspected crack in the block.
By the time I reset the timing on the boat while its running ... it should be plenty hot to see if the block is truly leaking

Hopefully the block is OK. IF, and it is a big IF, your block is ok, then really the only thing you got burned on is the manifolds. The rest is cosmetic and you should have seen all that.

I wonder if it froze with some water in there from the test ride? That could account for the cracked manifolds.

Everyone says they got ripped off, or they got taken. The previous owner gave you every opportunity to find the issues. You hired an inspection company. I am thinking if the previous owner knew about the issues they would have never allowed an inspector. Unless of course they know eachother. BUT lets face it, the boat is 23 years old. If you were buying a 23 year old car, I bet you would expect some maintanance issues to arrise.

Most definitely. And I don't mind putting in some elbow geese and a few bucks to sort that out! : )
The boat is being stored in my dads shop right now. Did I mention his shop is an auto detail and auto vinyl shop!
All the access to industrial chemicals I need for cleaning, a heat gun to strip all the old decals off, carpet shampooer for
the inside, a great power polisher/buffing machine... and all the vinyl I can use for new graphics and decals. Im really looking forward to it. Its a blank canvas per say and I will make sure to document everything as I go along the way. This is one my dad just finished. The one on the left
is not the exact same boat but the closest we could find to the original before he started. The one on the right
is his completed project

BUT lets face it, the boat is 23 years old. If you were buying a 23 year old car, I bet you would expect some maintenance issues to arise.

Maintenance issues, yes.. Abuse or neglect issues, no.
If I were buying a 23 year old car I would, without even thinking about it or looking at,
replace the brakes, do a tune up, plugs and wires, change headlights bulbs, wiper blades,
change oil. Things I would consider after inspection would be brake lines, exhaust, tires,
glass and rad flush.

Unless the KM's were super high on the 23 year old car I would not expect to do a engine
over haul or replacement. With some common cents involved and situationall circumstances of course.

If I bought a 23 year old car or a 5 year old car that ran good on a test drive, had a
mechanic inspect it. Bought it, got it home and noticed a puddle under the car.
Took it to a new mechanic who explains to me the block is cracked due to poor
coolant being used in the engine plus someone has tried to repair it with ... JB weld
and the patch is failing off ... well.. then I would feel like... I got taken.

Its a buyer beware market.. I totally get it.
I screwed up. I must have looked across 4 different selling websites for boats for months before I
found the one I bought. I read page after page, hour after hour of things to watch out for.
Brands to avoid. Stuff to watch and do before I bought this boat. But in the end...
it still didn't pay off.

Oh well right? Sucks I know, but the boats here now. Either I can stare at it and let it rot away
in its trailer for the next 10 years kicking myself for buying it or.... I can fix and enjoy it.
When I go back down in a few weeks, Ill take better pictures of the boat. LOLZ .. All
I got right now it a picture of everything we have ripped out

I read that you felt he stuffed something in the cracks for the "test drive"? Then I read that the boat was inspected, but they don't check for water leaking on winterized boats.

Unless I read it wrong, shouldn't these items been done at the same time? Inspected and sea trialed? Good you got your money back and I hope your block is good.

However you said the first owner did great maintenance, but the latest owner didn't. I also read that there were original plugs in the motor? If they are original to the boat, the first owner never changed them? Seems like a lack of maintenance to me.

Nah. I had the inspection done before I made the 2000 km drive to pick the boat up.
I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing all that driving for nothing. A strategy that didn't work in my favor.

Assumptions. Im not sure if they were factory plugs or not. They were just bad and very old. No electroids left on plugs. Could have needed new plugs before the original owner sold it to the next guy.. and the next guy just didn't bother to replace them. The good part about him not changing the plugs was I could see what condition the motor has been running in. They just lots of carbon deposits on them. No water or antifreeze burn. Which is good. ... sorta

TYVM! It sure does seem like a lot of friendly folk on this site : )

The count down begins to getting back to the boat. I should know more by the end of next weekend.
I did get an awesome phone call today! The place I dropped off my mooring covers to for repair estimated about $350 to $400 to repair them. They call today to let me know they were finished and only $110 to fix!

They look awesome and the upholstery shop did an amazing job!

Re: I got taken : (

Just to add some light to this saga, got me a boat last year got screwed by seller but i let him do it. problems everywhere engines never serviced in 20 yrs looked like. Pumps out electrical bad gauges not working hull had big sour spot. So took a month to get engines right had to change everything wires plugs dist. rebuild. Took carbs off and sent out for rebuild, wireing redone where needed, gauges replaced scrounged them out. Now fixing sour spot on hull used info from Frisco great site. in the end my wife and I just love the boat it is the envy of many and runs like an offshore at wot. So keep heart knock things down one at a time and in the end you will love the work you have done and be the next expert for the next sucker and every day there is one.

Re: I got taken : (

Zraden,
Sorry to hear about the woes with your first boat. i bought my first boat last year and had to basically rebuild it from hull up plus swop out the motor which turned out to be shot. Last year, I learned so much. It was invaluable for the future. Would I have learned the same buying a newer, plug the key in and play boat? No. What I have now is a boat better built than when ti was new. Either I'll get the enjoyment out of it or the next owner will. I've also given a few more years to a nice looking SR 180BR that may otherwise ended up in the great dumpster in the sky. Try and keep on top of costs and don't pay over the odds, ever. You've got the money back from the inspection. Forget about the numbnut PO, there's no mileage in him now. Read Friscoboaters thread on his SR220 rebuild, he got caught just the same and he's an experienced guys. Learn from the rebuild and just try not to stress too much and you'll have a lot of enjoyable times on the water to look forward to. Go for it.

Re: I got taken : (

Many of us actually buy these broken boats and fix em because we love the project so much. We are the sick one's that need therapy, and perhaps a divorce lawyer too. I was already divorced when I bought my "project" knowing full well, I would be tearing it apart, fixing, and making it better, faster, more cool!!
This may not make you feel any better, sorry if that's the case.
You have the tools, the garage, and lots of other nice items to make this boat really nice, some guys do all the work outside, with little or no help. This site will really help you figure out what and how.

I'd guess the block is dickered too. I drove to Calgary and bought a "winterized" boat, had new manifolds on it, looked good, and was what i wanted, drug it 900km home, and on the water for the first time she siezed. pull the intake manifold and look behind your lifters. :( I had a girthy crack on the port side...
Where are you located? that's some nice wrap work!!

Hi sorry to hear about the "surprises" I bought a glass boat knowing it needed a new deck and stringers... And transom... Foam... Bellows... Gimble bearing... Shifter cable... Ok maybe I didnt know it needed all that but I know the boat better than my wife now and in less than one year I will be ready soon to enjoy. It is a great feeling and all the know how is in iboats and the great people that are part of it.
Good luck!

I may be late to the party but if your block is cracked you owe it to yourself to look at the Lock-N-Stitch repair method. It is a permanent fix and you can do it yourself. Look at this method before you grind any material away and epoxy the crack. Many repairs can be made with just the stitching pins without the use of locks. The guys at Lock-N-Stitch are very helpful.

Metal Stitching

You can look at my thread for a repair I made with stitching pins. Look at posts #40 & #49
