No offense, but based on your description, on why you were doing, what you were doing and your reaction during the results, of your actions, there certainly was some room, to question driving abilities.

Maybe it's because I'm a truck driver, but I like to think I am in control, even when I may not be.

It's much easier on snow but since you don't have snow, the next heavy rain find a deserted (preferably) blacktop space. Turn the traction control off and then floor it and turn the wheel left or right. If you turn right the back end of the car is going to go LEFT and then you turn the wheel LEFT to control the skid.

If you wan't to come north to the land of snow and ice for Christmas I'm sure many of us could teach you how it's done.

ok, first off. did i not clearly say that i know you have more experience than i? and since you're a truck driver you clearly have taken many classes on driving and have many hours on the road. yet, you just seem to be criticizing me on what i already understand and am yearning to learn how to improve on my driving skills. maybe from all that time you think you would be smart enough to give some constructive criticism rather than rant on how bad i am at driving.

maybe you should tell everyone else on here on how bad of a driver they are because they made stupid mistakes?

second, you clearly do not know who i am nor do i hope you don't, and have you seen how i drive?

third, accidents can happen to anyone.

i believe i did this when i realized i was facing the right side barrier at an angle and then steering to the right but my mistake was that i kept my foot on the brake very hard resulting in my over steering and then doing a 180

Glad everything worked out ok........this time. I say that because it WILL happen again. Next time,you may not be the instigator, but it WILL happen. When I was not much older than you, a few incidents enlightened me to DEFENSIVE driving. You will not believe what a benefit it is to know what you can actually do in what seems like a hopeless situation. I could fill this thread with incidents that have happened since then while driving, that ALL had the potential for very serious injury or death, the most recent being yesterday. Putting yourself into controlled skids, as well as other maneuvers, and have the experience and ability to get out of it, is amazing and life saving. When you know what to do, you body will do it seemingly without thought. You learned a good lesson early. Now get yourself trained early as well. BTW, glad your still with us.

this incident has opened my eyes to a totally new aspect of driving. i'm very observant when i'm driving and i believe that i drive defensively. i always have in my mind what the car next to me, behind me, in front of me could do and how i can avoid it. double checking stop signs. etc.

I think he was saying jigngrub was being too hard on you.
All I can say is, when in doubt, slow down! Water, ice, rough road, whatever. If you need to let the motor out to check something, pick a proper time for it. Sunny, dry, straight and empty blacktops are very common out here in the middle of nowhere. Took a couple of my cars to speeds beyond 'reasonable and prudent' and it was fun. Sure glad I didn't have a blowout or another problem because things go bad real fast at 100+. (I'm not saying you were going that fast.) I chalk it up to being a stupid kid at the time and remember that slow and steady wins the race. I have some other friends that lived too fast, and they've already lost the race. RIP

i decided to test the MAF today by disconnecting it and seeing how the engine would run.

I suspect this is a telling piece of info. The MAF sensor is an input device to the engine management computer. It, along with the throttle position switch, and the O2 sensor, is what determines how much fuel to feed to the engine. You removed a critical piece of input to the processor, so that all it had to go on was throttle position and O2. I suspect the computer then fed a rich mixture, causing a power surge that started the entire process. That, coupled with over-reaction on your part, and wet roads, is what led to the entire incident. You were lucky.........today.

I suggest you don't go unhooking pieces/parts of your car until you really know what they do, and how they might effect the vehicle.

i should have waited for a sunny and dry day...

i ended up testing the voltage on the MAF today and it was too high. i can conclude that it does need replacing.

i probably do deserve a swift kick in the rear but i believe mentoring would be much more effective especially in the long term.

my speeding days went away after the first month (drop in gas mileage ).

also, i had a hard time in seeing as it was about 10pm and there were not too many street lights.

i know what a MAF sensor does...i disconnected it because i heard pinging in my car when i let the engine loose and when it goes into overdrive, roughly 40mph, it would pinging slightly too.

i disconnected it because i wanted to make sure it was the MAF and not a exhaust leak or some other engine problem like the valve chain guides etc. the next thing on the list would be the EGR but i have determined that it is the MAF.

yes i knew that the computer would basically go into limp mode.

please stop underestimating me on my knowledge. i'm not trying to be arrogant but i'm tired of people putting me down because i'm under 18 or not up to "par" according to their standards.

Sometimes a swift kick is the best mentoring.
I've had some hot cars. (sleepers are my favorite) But I always have to think that when I'm doing something stupid, even in the best conditions, that something bad can happen and it's just chance keeping from a disaster.
Nowadays I'd rather get rear-ended for going "too" slow than to fly off the overpass on a patch of black ice.
But I'm talking from someone that just got sideswiped by an idiot running a red light, so I'm super cautious right now.
I have to go through the same intersection I got hit on 3-4 times a day and definitely look left and right AFTER the light has turned green before I'll go!

when i was really young this happened to my mother. the other lady ran a red light and totaled our bonneyville or something like that. i just drove up the same on coming ramp today. it was quite nerve racking for me but i wanted to overcome my fear and make my fear a strength. i'm constantly looking at my car's guages (paranoid). also, i constantly look at my rear view mirrors for speeders and oncoming cars. i'm never the first one off of the stoplight.

Of course you're an arrogant minor. You're supposed to be. I know I sure as hell was. Just keep it in check somewhat. You're supposed to get in trouble. Just keep the speed down when conditions are less than perfect. If you need to go fast, find some abandoned but well maintained country road when it's dry. I really don't like the idea of sensors being able to override my inputs to my car, but even if you somehow messed up the MAF sensor, better conditions would have lead to a far less dramatic outcome.

nah, the MAF was broken in the first place i think the pressure side of the MAF is going bad (MAF measures the mass of the air flow passing by and pressure ) because it was about 65 degrees out and the other time about 90 out and it still pinged.

i can get a rebuilt motorcraft one from rockauto but it's about 100 bucks if i turn my old one it. i might just pick one up from the junkyard and then test it to see how it does. (voltage test )

yup, i believe it was the first thing i started screaming to myself after i got off the highway and when i called my best friend to tell him that i love him. came home and gave my parents a hug.

also in the title of the thread.
