I'm not an expert like some of the other guys on here, but I'll try to help out a bit. I may learn something from everyone else after I post my limited knowledge! I am working with a 1971 "selectric" Evinrude, which sounds similar to your system. What year & model is yours? My service manual says the following shift sequence has to happen: FWD - no solenoid fire, Nuet - one solenoid, Rev - both solenoids fire. The acceptable ohms are between 5-6 for each solenoid, so that sounds good. Check the voltage to each of the solenoid leads, as you depress the shift selector buttons. No power to either is fwd, power to one is nuet, power to both is rev. If you always have power to one, then maybe your nuet switch is bad or stuck. You could also disconnect the leads while running & see if it defaults into forward gear. I'm probably jumping the gun, since I don't even know if you have the same type of system! OK when my motor is off its in gear when i start it it stays in neutral no matter if i put in forward or reverse Ive narrowed it down to shift sylnoid. How can i check it when it is out of the motor to see if its working right? Hers what i did so far. I checked each wire and got 6ohms and when i checked both of them together i got around 12 ohms i read somewhere that i shouldnt get any. Is that right? then when i was holding the unit in my hands and put 12 volts to each wire one of the sylinoids would really pull but the other one would barely pull i would think that each sylinoid would pull the same so i think one of them is bad. Does that sound right or im i way off? Any ideas or help would be greatly app. thans
