Humming sound after crusing

Hllo,
I have a 1992, 75 horspower, 3 cylinder that after making a cruising run of 30 minutes or so (at 2500-3500 RPM) makes a humming (like a pump running) sound after the engine is shut down. If I turn the key back to the "ON" position, the motor automatically cranks until I turn it to "START" and then it starts right back up. The humming sound continues when the motor is running.
This only seems to happen after the motor has been started/run/stopped a few times. For example, after the run back to the launch after a day of fishing.
The motor runs cool, pumps water and is used in salt water.
Thanks!

sounds like a stuck selenoid on the starter, but are you saying the starter turns the motor before you turn the key to "start"? and when you do turn the key to start....it fires up?

The engine does not crank until I turn the key one click to the "run" position (to the point where the warning system normally makes a single "beep") then the motor starts cranking. Then when I turn it to "start" it fires right up.
I have also had issues which I think may be the starter solenoid--it will click but not turn the starter some times.

is there a bilge pump running somwhere? If the discharge hose is off, you won't have water being pumped out, and all you'll hear is your pump running. If water is comming in, your boat is sinking, pump or no pump. Also sounds like you electrical gremlins with your starter...

Take the cowl off and see if the starter motor is running.
Bilge or live well pump was also my thought.
