I bought a 1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 with a Chevy 305 I/O, OMC drive. I am trying to find out what the HP rating was for that engine? I have had to do a little work to get it ready for the water. A new carburetor, exhaust manifolds, prop shaft and both bellows. The previous owner had totally redone the interior and it looks great...the biggest reason I bought it. I will post some pics when I get it back.

Re: HP rating

Just go an look up to see what a comparable 305 in a chevy truck would have made for power in that year. Probably around 150hp with near 200ft-lbs torq. Boat i/o v8's tend to be rated very generously compared to their automotive counterparts while the marine versions tend to have a similarly or more restrictive intake/exhaust system.

Re: HP rating

Thanks for the replys. The engine is carbureted, Rochester Quad. I was guessing around 200 so I wasn't off too bad.

Re: HP rating

the mercruiser 305 in my 1978 arrowglass with a 2 barrel was 198 hp
the marine engines generally make more power than car engines because they have higher compression ratios....

some mercruiser 305's with 4 barrels were rated at 230 hp

I would expect omc to be the same or very close

Re: HP rating

Seen the paper work on a 1992 model 1950 with a 5L, it was rated at 190.

Also checked on my 1988 Safari van 4.3l-- 180hp, and my 1987 GMC van 5.0 190 hp.

Re: HP rating

I thought those 305s were 220HP, but it did vary some over the years. My Chevy 4.3L V6 w/ 4bbl carb has 205HP.

Re: HP rating

The main reason for asking is for insurance purposes. I was not too concerned with what it was until they asked me.

Re: HP rating

That surprises me since a 305 is one of the most popular motors ever made. The power is pretty standard. A 19 footer could easily have a V8. Was your Capri ever avail with a V8? If not, that might be the source of the question.

No they don't. They typically have the same crappy smogger pistons as a comparable year automotive production engine. The difference is boat engines appear to be rated at sae gross where 72+ automotive engines are rated sae net.

The 305 is a v-8.

I thought marine engines were made with heavy duty internal parts since they run at higher RPMs than automotive engines?

No, Most have the same internal parts as cars and trucks, except for the camshaft. The cam is a marine grind for better low end power, similar to a truck cam.

You can get Marine V8s with 4 bolt main bearings in big block motors, but I would assume there is also a non-marine use for these

Re: HP rating

cams are specific to application and at least in the older chevy v8 marine engines I've been into the pistons were flat tops.... I did find a 305 with dish pistons in it once but most have been 350's (260hp) and have had flat tops

either way... for the o/p I'd say you can comfortably tell your ins agent 230 hp
