Left hand twist drillbits are your new best friend Coolguy! and as Mr. Martin said, NeverSeize.

If the bolt didn't break off flush, you may be able to get it out afterwards using a stud puller. It clamps around the remaing bolt shank. If it did you're gonna hafta do some drilling.
As mentioned earlier, stainless bolts aren't the answer. Never-seize and grade 8 bolts are.

ohhhh well alright.

eeek! grade 8? that's a lot of money.....especially for 13 bolts....

ill have to see the damage when i get exhaust manifold off.

i don't think the left hand drill bit will work because of the fact that's it's corroded in there and the bit will slip out

SLOW and easy spray works eh....regular bolts and never seize are all you need....never seize will burn off a bit 4 sure in heated areas....tap the holes out to will help alot...be a clean start for reassembly.....you have to drill one anyways....remember slow and easy when drilling it out too don't step up your drill sizes to fast

Re: how to use a propane torch?

can u weld a nut to the remaining part u broke off in the block? put a nut over the broke part and fill in the hole make sure u weld to the broke bolt, done this many times on different things, with the heat from the weld should make it come out easier also....i have used a hammer inpack it break loose some stubborn bolts b4, be sure to go the right way and lube good after each whack and i to like using trans.fluid for penetration oil and burnt motor oil. hope this helps, this is how i would do things, but this is just my 2cents good luck.

ohh man. i'm hoping that there's enough bolt sticking up and out of the block but i think it broke off nice a flush...which could be a good thing if i'm going to try the left hand drill bit or retap.

i don't have access to a welding machine.

Bolt/stud removal

IS SLOW AND EASY<> SLOW AND EASY

If you did not break it off flush, and cannot grab it with a stud puller, then sand remains flat to the surface of the head using an high speed sander (or comparable tool) with either 60 or 80 grit disk. Once the outline of the bolt/stud contrasts against the surface of the head stop.

Take ?extra extra? care to center punch the bolt/stud (check an empty hole to see if it bottoms out, note the depth, mark you drill bit accordingly) you will want to use a size drill bit that will leave a hole that will provide for more two drill outs. You will want to drill all the way through bolt/stud if possible, to help release it.

1. Small drill known as a pilot drill
2. Two sizes up (number or letter) to release the center tension of the bolt/stud allowing room for inward expansion, hopefully freeing up the threads
3. Reverse direction drill bit, to remove bolt/stud remains

Good luck & use plenty of fluid

another bolt out:D today

2 more left....1 is moving nice and easy but it still needs more time and the second one is barely if not at al moving.

all i can do is read and prepare to remove the bolt but until i see it i can't do anything.

i understand what you mean by freeing up the threads.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

today i got the exhaust manifold off.

broke 3 out of 13 bolts. 2 of them are sticking up and i might be able to bring them out with a vice grip. 1 will need to be drilled out.

well i have good and bad news....number 1 and 2 pistons are perfect. these the usual pistons to go first in an overheat. i think i caught the overheat just in time and only minimal damage was done. 3 and 4 were a different story though. they had some scoring and a little bit of blowby on the pistons:eek: i think that a long time ago the motor was forced to run and the lower carb was dirty restricting oil flow causing scoring that is why number 1 and 2 look good.

any ideas on what to do? i will be taking pictures soon.

the scoring is enough to catch my fingernail. all the rings and free and moving though.

should i just replace the gaskets and go and enjoy the motor? finding a new one in the future.

If the scoring is not to deep, run those honing ball's up and down a couple of time's, micrometer the cylinder to see if it still in spect, then re ring.
hope things work out.

honing balls?

what about the weird noise coming from the lower crankshaft hole? i just replaced the lower crankshaft bearing and both seals and oil ring before the overheat?

Re: how to use a propane torch?

Honing balls are a set of little balls with a fine grit on them.
they are attached together and resemble a chimeny cleaner sort of??
You put the one end into a drill, give the cylinder a good shot of oil, power up the balls and go up and down the cylinder a few times till the glacing is removed (do not stay in one place, up and down action).
you won't get a perfect cross hatch patern, but it works good.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

i think that i'm going to go ahead and replace the gaskets and use the motor till it dies.

the motor still has good compression on all four just one or two small black spots on the pistons. 1 and 2 are perfect but 3 and 4 having scratches bit deep and some black.

too old to rebuild and i think it will stand a little bit of abuse since it has 3 rings instead of 2.

will be looking for a nice 1973+ 50hp johnyrude.
