Re: how to use a propane torch?

hopely i won't get any other ideas haha:D hey look! wood building lol... nah just kiddding

once i check compression in my last cylinder to see if the block is good or not i will go ahead lay the block on it's side with exhaust cover side up. then put some wd-40 on the bolts that have a bowl around them( wd-40 will stay in there) after a day or 2 or tapping and reapply if evaporated i will try to loosen the bolts

i have school during the week so i guess i can wd-40 tap and then homework:D

Blue bottle propane...........good for soldering or lighting fire places, charcoal grills or similar.

If you want more heat get an ox/ac cutting torch.

MAPP gas gets pretty hot, too. More expensive than propane, though.
Maybe cheaper then an oxy/ac. Of course, not nearly as much fun, either.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

Ok, a MAPP gas torch works great for heating bolts to remove them. I have used mine for basically this purpose and ONLY this purpose.

(o2 sensors, tie rod ends, exhaust manifold bolts)

I suggest dont even mess around with that guy in the garage, go get yourself a simple click light kit at any *-mart or tool store.

This does not always work, but the failure rate for me, has been very low. First of all, wd-40 is not penetrating oil. WD is a water dispersant, it removes moisture, it's just an oil. It does not work as well as these other penetrating oils, that do not coat a surface as well. Use some PB blaster, read the directions on the back if you're not familiar, pretty simple but gives you some tips for effectiveness.

Soak it down in PB, well. A few times. Give it a few taps with the side of a wrench or a small hammer. Don't whale on it, just a few taps to get the pb "down to the bone" as we say.

Take your torch, light it up, concentrate the sharpest flame you can get, and apply heat to the bolt. You want to be liberal with the heat here, dont be afraid of melting the bolt, you've got a ways to go before that happens, but dont go heating it cherry red and staying on it. Thats usually where I go, as soon as it starts to change to cherry, take the flame off, and then give it a twist. Should come out no problem. Even pressure, dont jerk on it!

Coolguy,

As the last post was about the uses of WD-40, and I agree with PB being a better bet, and this thread ( pun intended:D) is about stuck bolts, check this out:

>They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants
>with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from
>a "scientifically rusted" environment.
>
>*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
>None ...................... 516 pounds
>WD-40 ..................... 238 pounds
>PB Blaster ................ 214 pounds
>Liquid Wrench ............. 127 pounds
>Kano Kroil ................ 106 pounds
>ATF-Acetone mix..............53 pounds<<<<<- this one wins, I have tried it and , well, wow!!!

Marlo 180

Thanks for the tip, I fight stuck bolts and nuts all day long, When I use Kroil oil (Great stuff ) to loosen them I hear nothing but bitching from all over the shop,...... about thirty folks.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

go to a paint shop and pick u a quart of acetone, polish remover often times have other stuff mixed in, that can reduce the effectiveness of it, if you don't have a paint shop, then head for you nearest hardware shop, they should have it.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

mapp gas will work great, i use mine for soldering copper pipe. if you get the right tip you can melt copper with it, i've seen it. i would tap bolts with a hammer to help break them loose previous to using a wrench on them

NO, Not water! ATF - Auto Tranny Fluid , and Acetone- from the hardwware store, , and yes it will remove fingernail polish too:p

Re: how to use a propane torch?

if it removes the bolt then a little paint will be worth it.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

Acetone will evaporate very quickly, and with the ATF mixed in it?s not likely to remove the paint, it may however lighten it up or discolor it some.

FYI >If you should want to remove paint with acetone use a scotch abrasive pad.

PS<>When using Acetone it?s a good idea to wear rubber gloves

And to think this all started with a question about propane as a heat source

Re: how to use a propane torch?

1. I find PB better than WD40. SiliKroil wil loosen anything. (and also make anything within sight unpaintable.)
2. With penetrants, time is your friend.
3. So is vibration. When you spray penetrant on the bolts, lightly tap them right on the head like a nail, with the smallest hammer you own.
4. Continuing on the vibration topic, the safest way to remove a crusty bolt is a small (3/8" drive) air wrench. After the bolts have soaked for as much time as possible, and using a six point socket, run the wrench in reverse and forward alternately, about a second at a time. As soon as it moves a little bit, wet it down good with your penetrant of choice and continue to alternate loosening and tightening till it spins out.
5. Sometimes warming up the area helps, as the aluminum expands more than the steel bolt when it warms up. With extremely concentrated heat (oxy-acetylene welding tip) The bolt can be heated up quickly, then allowed to cool, sometimes forcing the hole to open up a bit. Follow with penetrant after it cools down.

Contrary to some advice above, it is just as easy to twist off a bolt with steady pressure as with jerking. If you exceed the tensile strength and elastic limit of the bolt, it will break.

Replace the bolts, and clean up the threads in the castings with a tap.

hope it helps

Re: how to use a propane torch?

Kroil is good stuff.

The ATF Acetone mixture has mixed reviews depending on who you talk to. Some people say its the next best thing to sliced bread and others say its worthless. IMO if it really was that good, someone would have already commercially marketed it with a fancy name.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

From what experience I have had with stuck rusty bolts is if its gonna break its gonna break. Using penetrating oil makes it less likely, but only if you give it time, more the better.

I've used impact guns, wrenches, cheater bars, and everything under the sun.
You can break a bot by steady pressure just as easy as jerking it. If your really unlucky you could smash your hand real good.

Re: how to use a propane torch?

OK, first off the OP did not "originally" say what kind of motor the exhaust bolt were coming out of,
Usually in the "non boating technical topics catagory" it is cars or trucks, and YUP I still figured the motor was between the wheel wells, thats why the no torch thing.
Second off, how would you get a good shot of penetrating fluid on one of those bolts??

(and how in the heck are you going to get an impact in there, there is not alot of room to move on the newer stuff) ;)

Re: how to use a propane torch?

i said earlier that it was going to be used on a boat.

all i asked was how to use a small torch.

1961 merc500 overheated a couple of days ago. i need to replace the exhaust gaskets and water jacket.
