How to test my Tachometer?

I was trying to test my Tachometer. if connected the engine don't fire. once disconnected the engine fire right up. Anybody knows how to test it? Also how to test the Temp sending unit?

As well as details about what you are hooking the tach up to. As in what wires you are connecting it to.
