How to start my 1956 Evinrude Fastwin

I attempted to take my new boat and motor out for the first time to day and encountered an issue: It fired up right off the bat and worked fine backing away from the ramp. However, when I got out a ways and attempted to shift into forward gear, it died and I could never get it to fire again. My question is: What is the proper starting procedure for a '56 Fastwin regarding the setting of the idle knobs and choke on the front of the engine, and how do I adjust them when she's up and running?

Assuming of course that all is well with the motor.

Pump the primer on the tank until firm. Pull out the choke. Turn tiller handle to "Start". Pull over.

Check out the FAQs for a thread about setting the needles.

Before going to the lake, did you check compression, spark, fuel delivery, etc...

Did you see if it was pumping water? Any maintainance before going out?

Also check your fuel for having any water in it.

I believe all is well with the motor. I just purchased it less than a month ago and the gentleman I purchased it from started it before I bought it and it ran fine, the impeller has been replaced and the carb has been rebuilt. I haven't checked the compression, spark or fuel delivery, but I assume all is in order since it ran fine backing it away from the ramp. It would also fire and run for a short time afterwards, but nothing sustainable. I also don't believe the gas is the issue as I just filled up a clean tank before heading out. I believe my sole issue is setting the dials, I think I was flooding it. I unhooked the gas line a couple times, gave it a few pulls and it would fire and die.

Im not sure what tank you are running on, but is the vent open on it?

If he had it tuned and running you shouldnt need to mess with the needles.

For a starting point, low speed 1.5 turns out from lightly seated, high speed 3/4, then follow the thread in the FAQS

If the motor has a 2-line pressure tank, make sure the tank is holding pressure as that is the way gas is delivered to the engine. Loosen the cap and you should have a whoosh of pressure escaping the tank if it's working properly. If no pressure escapes, pump the button and see if the motor keeps running. If it runs when you pump the button, but dies when you stop, then it's the tank.

It's not a pressurized tank, and it is vented. Thanks for the advice on setting the needles. I'll give that a shot. I only had them about 1/4 to 1/2 turn out from seated, that must have been my problem.
