I'm in need of a transom repair and just trying to figure out how to get to it basically. I have read all the how tos on coating the wood and all just trying to figure out how to get to all the wood in This one without cutting the back half of the boat off. It's a custom craft hull and is a one piece design so there's no top cap to be removed which would make this "easy". Here are some pics of it and if somebody could just give me some details about where to cut into it and what would be my best bet to fix this as painlessly as possible.

Re: How to repair this transom

Hey Mikey: He likes it............. Sorry about that, but had to be done...

Welcome to the iboats dry dock.

When you say 1 piece design, and that there's no cap to remove, I'm not sure I follow. It certainly 'looks' like it is a 'cap' joined to the hull at (behind) the rubrail:

Is it a hull & liner type construction, where the 'cap' is also the entire interior surface of the boat, similar (but perhaps built slightly different) to a Boston Whaler:

Note how the fiberglass rises from the exterior hull at the waterline, up to & over the gunwale, down the interior side of the hull, across the interior deck, and up & over the gunwale on the other side. It too has a rubrail, but once joined, it's a very tough boat to work on, even tougher for DIY work at home.

Custom Craft boats ( not the old company out of Buffalo NY ) are still building boats. It would be best to contact them on their construction. Custom Craft Boats

Looks like it's a 2 man operation so getting info should be easy

Re: How to repair this transom

Thanks for the replies.
I am basing my info off of examining this boat and a boat dealer not far from me called custom marine who said custom craft use to be made in metter Ga by a two man operation and they seemed to have good info on custom crafts but may be missing something. I sent the guy an email asking about removing the top cap because I could not find a seam under the rub rail and this was his reply "CustomCraft boats are roll gunnel, single piece construction". It seems to be a similar design as the Boston whaler.
Thanks for that link to custom craft I have not been able to find that through all research. Ill give them a call Monday.

It looks like Bob Fricke of Custom Craft boats also works at M&B Marine and looks like they are located in South Jersey.. As far as single peice construction, the only way that works is with a sacrificial mold and I doubt a boat builder would use a design that needed a new mold each time unless they are/ were all one off's but I don't think they are entire one off's. There is a seam somewhere

Re: How to repair this transom

It might be a 2 piece construction, but it's not designed as a cap & hull that can be separated, or at least not easily....

There appears to be filler of some sort between the hull & cap along the area I circled in green:

Is there any seam of any kind across the transom's top edge, the blue arrow above?

It looks like a typical cap overhanging the hull, where the yellow arrow points. What does it look like looking up into that area?

It might not be typical, and not having a cross section of the hull/cap joint, it may be very difficult to tell how it was originally joined by the factory. Until you figure out how's put together, it's gonna be tough to figure out how to take it apart.

Re: How to repair this transom

I'd say the only way is to cut it at the gunwales in front of the splashwell, down the sides and across the deck and along the seam under the bump rail and as you say, Remove the rear section of the boat. I don't see any other way. But hey, I'm just an...

That design makes it more difficult to get it apart, you need to do some cutting to get at it.

It sorta looks like my first Dixie did. The center section of the transom seemed to be glassed together, where the splash well is, then rivets around the rest of the cap behind the rub rail.

The entire rear section of the boat is glassed together and it turns into one piece that needs to be cut apart.
