Re: How to repair a Dime sized bad spot in fiberglass hull

well i kinda skimped at the end. I couldnt bring myself to buy a quart of gel coat to fix this one little spot. Yeah im a tight wad sometimes, but its on the bottom and it should blend in well after im done with it. Its an epoxy enamel paint. May have made a mistake doing it with paint, but im gonna try it and see...worse comes to worse I can gel coat later.

Gonna let it dry and ill feather edge wet sand it and blend it in somewhat, then slightly buff it. Its still wet in this picture, but ill post one more in a day or so of the finished product.

I dont suggest you buff it out .. just leave it :) ..

Nice color .. but as soon as you put a buffing wheel on that it will most likely burn through.

Good enough is probably good enough in this case.

resin and heavy grade mat. started out with a big piece and went smaller, then put another big piece over the top. 5 layers in all. Ive ran a buffer before, im gonna try to blend it in...the whole boat needs it really. may run over the whole boat with an orbital buffer...

....on second thought, i just went and pulled the cover up to take a peak after the paint dried. Think i will just leave it alone. Its a dang close color match as it is. probably just take a very fine scotch brite pad and knock some the glossiness off it and let it ride.

Also I wanna give my thanks to a great site and the members willing to help a man in need. Thanks!

Just a thought....yd correct me if I'm wrong but could you use the paper off longboard sandpaper as a release film. Put the mat and resin then paper and smooth out sqeege. Let it dry and peel paper off

If you are talking about the paper you peel off the adhesive style sand paper, yes , but things like wax paper work better, mainly because you can cut it to any size or shape you need. Normal 4 or 6 mil plastic sheeting will work to, Mylar is what’s used in glass shops that do a great deal of this type of thing. There are many ways to get the glass and resin onto the right spot, the exact method used is up to personal preference and the situation.

I agree with ondarvr. Just to add that you cant see any air voids under the Paper. You really dont know what you have until its cured out.

Ive never used wax paper or plastic. I just use a resin/bubble roller.

I have used peel-ply though :) ( Its kinda hard to explain .. but it leaves a 'prepped' surface when its torn off the glass surface ).
