how do you remove the lower unit from a 1988 40hp johnson to replace the water pump thank you for any help you can give me

I would suggest you get an OMC Factory Service Manual to do this work. If you do any work on it in the future it has lots of info. Ken Cook in Milwaukee Wi.

Certainly agree with boobie in general terms but on this particular job my manual says something like " disconnect the shift rod" and that's about all. I looked and looked and could not find a place to disconnect it. For my 95 - 40HP I removed the air silencer, starter and the bottom carb. to get at the shift rod disconnect. Horrible job even then. Since then I've seen others post the best way was to remove the lower cowling to get at the linkage. I have not tried that but would certainly look at that before a repeat of the way I did it.
