Certainly agree with boobie in general terms but on this particular job my manual says something like " disconnect the shift rod" and that's about all. I looked and looked and could not find a place to disconnect it. For my 95 - 40HP I removed the air silencer, starter and the bottom carb. to get at the shift rod disconnect. Horrible job even then. Since then I've seen others post the best way was to remove the lower cowling to get at the linkage. I have not tried that but would certainly look at that before a repeat of the way I did it.
