MY BROTHER BOUGHT A BOAT AND TRAILER, THE TRAILER HAD NO TAGS ON IT, THE DPS, SAYS HE NEEDS VEND NUMBER FOR IT , CAN NOT FIND A VEND NUMBER ON IT. HE LIVES IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, WHATS IS THE BEST WAY TO GET TAGS FOR THE BOAT TRAILER

They're looking for the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).<br /><br />Some people in your brother's situation register their trailers as homemade. He could download form #VTR-305-A from TX DOT .

That's supposed to be the best way to register stolen trailers also! <br /><br />The VIN number is usually on a plate near the tongue. The trailer manufacturer could provide information on the location of the VIN number.

I. . . um. . . know a guy who got out a set of number punches and punched his USN serial number into the frame of a trailer, which TX promptly registered with that as the VIN number.

When I tried to register my then "new" 1994 LoadRite trailer in PA, I was told that I needed a paper impression of the serial number. LoadRite used a printed metallic label. PennDOT would not accept a photo of the label, hence my trailer now has a steel stamped serial number on the frame.

G-Daddy, but doesn't PA also still title trailers? But not title boats?? I know they were always a little strange in the past!

You are correct, Tilliam. Trailers are titled. You can also get a title for boat when you register it, for an extra $15. Not required, though.

The numbers are either on the Axle OR on the tongue<br /><br />Some mfg's like gdaddy says use a label which can come off over time...<br /><br />Here in NC i had to<br /><br />Get an application for a homemade trailer<br />stamp the # they gave me onto the tongue and axle some states let you stamp your own #<br />Then go to the state police and have them sign the application verifying the numbers <br />take the certificate back to the license agency and they gave me a license plate and registration<br /><br />A lot of hassle but pretty straight forward

Nice thought, Texas requires a paper rub of the S/N on out of state registrations. <br /><br />My trailer used a label that had worn off over the years. My options were to get the DPS to find the S/N(money and big hassle with arrainging appointment), or register it as home made. <br /><br />Its now a home made trailer. I really didn't know I was so good at making trailers. Wish I would have known JB's 'friend'.

Happened to me in a similiar way. I will be taking this up with the California DMV. When I went to transfer the title on my recent acqusition the license on the boat was current but the trailer had not been register for so long that the vehicle was "out of the system". In CA when the registration expires there is a minimum and maximum penalty. Not sure what is going to be the outcome on this. Not sure the beuracrat that I was working with is up to speed, but it appears that this trailer will get a new identity. My question is what happened to the original vin and how did they arive at it in the first place? As in all things it will depend on how well based the responsible person is and how much he wants to help of hinder your efforts. These people may not know how to do their jobs, but they know how to keep them.....
