i have a 1974 evinrude 50 horse. my boat had a dead 50 horse mercury on it when i bought it, and only a empty hole where the tach used to be. i am wanting to add a tach back to it, but was wondering is there any special type of tach i need and how i would need to go about wiring it to my engine.
THANKS

Re: how to add a tach

Buy the tach right here on iBoats. They are generic for most motors except some Force. Follow the instructions that comes with the tach. But if that gives you trouble, there are only four wires. 1) light, 2) ground, 3) +12V when the key is on, and 4) send. 1, 2, and 3 are easy as you can connect those three wires to the same three wires on any of the other gauges (fuel gauge for example) except the speedometer. #4 is the send line and is connected to the rectifier on the engine. Don't know about that age motor but the tach feed should be in the engine harness.

you may want to check into a "tiny tach" easy to install and around 36.00 bucks. check out their website. Im thinking of getting one myself. looks like a simple 2 or maybe 3 wire hookup. 1 wire to ground and other wraps around the spark plug wire. my 2 cents . cheers
