No fishing gear allowed on our boat, but I've never had anyone bring more than a towel and a cooler.

So what do you fish with?

We use a human for bait on a skinny stick about 60 feet behind the boat. Haven't got any bites yet.

So I think i figured it out... Did he struggle unloading those totes from the truck, but they seemed much lighter when he loaded them back up? Your buddy is an axe murderer, and they were all filled with 'chum' for fishing!

Of course! I was just supplying the part where they repeat ominously " a three hour tour..." in the song.

It's funnier if you sing it! :D

That's one perk to having a larger boat, we only need to bring food, towels (if there aren't clean, dry ones on the boat) and the baby diaper bag. Everything else is already there. Other usually just bring a cooler with what they prefer to drink/eat.

My 22 1/2 foot Islander has 6 rods, nets, tackle, towels, cooler, clothing, drink, food, chem toilet (ladies only!) and everything else I could need. Really, all my friend had to bring was a couple of rods, and a tackle box.
We may have a short meeting Friday morning if he asks to come along. I am not allowing all that crap on board.
And when I first voiced my concerns he said "this is nothing, you should see all the stuff Brian and I take when we go out". Brian is another buddy of mine who I obviously won't be inviting.

very little. I have a phone, leave yours at home, don't bring a tackle box the size of a suitcase and 2 maybe 3 rods tops

Ricohman - your story reminds me of a passenger I once had. He, along with the other two fellows, had been briefed before the trip that my boat was only 25' but had several nice built-in features to accommodate all their food and drinks, a fish box for their catch, a cabin to stow their jackets, but not a lot of room for big bulky items like coolers and tackle boxes. In particular, I told them that the boat carried all the terminal tackle they would need, but if they wanted to bring along a few of their favorite items, that would be fine.

First coming down the gangway was a huge cooler. Two of us hefted it over the rail into the cockpit. I open it without asking, and unloaded the contents into the boats built-in ice box and cooler. I then handed their empty cooler back to them and said, "Here, take this back to your truck."

Saving the best for last, I next looked up to see one of the guys wrestling a full size dolly down the gangway, stacked to the top of the handle with 3 or 4 large wooden tackle boxes. You know the kind, those old school saltwater jobs made out of plywood and trimmed out with the brass corners. Anyway, the ensuing conversation was heated and I seriously thought he was going to swing on me. I lost the argument. I gave his tackle boxes a boat ride and that was it. Some guys just don't get it.

I tell them -- boat shoes or no shoes. Bring your food and beverages. A small tackle box if you really want to but there is more than enough on my boat. If trolling they bring zero rods or boxes. If bottom fishing they can bring one very small bag and ONE rod as there are 8 on the boat. Anything more will probably fall overboard...

Re: How much stuff do you allow others to bring onboard?

I went fishing with a buddy of mine today, and I was overwhelmed with the amount of stuff he brought. This was an afternoon fishing trip about 5 hours in length.
He brought:
- large backpack
- large hockey bag
- tackle box
- a huge soft side tackle box
- a large plastic tupperware bin
- a smaller plastic bin
- yet another plastic bin
- yet another bin
- big cooler
- another backpack
- bag of food
- rubber boots
- extra pair of shoes
- 4 or 5 fishing rods
And I think there was more.
I stood looking at all this stuff which filled the back of his truck and said he can't possibly bring all that. I was standing there in my sandals with a single tackle box in my hand and a small cooler for our lunch.
He agreed to remove a change of clothes or two from the hockey bag and leave the bag along with his extra shoes and rubber boots. And we shared my small cooler. But the rest he brought and it filled the back of my 22 1/2 foot Islander. I crammed a bunch of it into the cuddy but he needed to have all these tubs and bins next to him.
I used one lure all day, and we caught the same amount of fish in the end. How do you approach this? I don't like the entire deck piled with these tubs of who-knows-what.
I am going to say, to anyone I invite or wants to come along, that they are allowed one backpack or bag for gear, and one tackle box and 2-3 rods. We can share one big cooler. Is this fair?

Did you ever ask him why he brought so much stuff?

I had heard that he brings a bunch of stuff but until I saw it with my own eyes I didn't really have an idea of how much it was.
Anyway, my new rule is:
- 2 rods
- tackle box
- one small bag
If anyone can't fish without tubs of crap then they can stay on the dock.

If anyone can't fish without tubs of crap then they can fish from the dock.

Fixed it.

If you invited me I promise to bring 2 rods, a small tackle box and maybe a small bag.

Re: How much stuff do you allow others to bring onboard?

That didn't go to well.
He told me that he cannot fish without the proper equipment and that if he can't bring all of his stuff he'd rather not go.
I think he was insulted, but I really don't know what to think. I don't think we will fish together anytime soon, on my boat anyway.
The wierd thing is he doesn't even have a boat.

I noticed that some people always do this. When I take someone to my private range they will bring every gun, scope, cleaning kit in their house, when I take someone camping they will bring enough stuff for an expedition to the top of everest, when i take someone on my boat they will bring enough food, booze to feed a small army, when I take my wife on vacation she brings enough clothes to live in the hotel for 6 months.

Yeah I don't get why people do this but you just have to have strict rules and not break then yourself to show that you are serious about them. It is one thing to bring lots if your going away for a few weeks but damm a day hell no
