How much stuff do you allow others to bring onboard?

I went fishing with a buddy of mine today, and I was overwhelmed with the amount of stuff he brought. This was an afternoon fishing trip about 5 hours in length.
He brought:
- large backpack
- large hockey bag
- tackle box
- a huge soft side tackle box
- a large plastic tupperware bin
- a smaller plastic bin
- yet another plastic bin
- yet another bin
- big cooler
- another backpack
- bag of food
- rubber boots
- extra pair of shoes
- 4 or 5 fishing rods
And I think there was more.
I stood looking at all this stuff which filled the back of his truck and said he can't possibly bring all that. I was standing there in my sandals with a single tackle box in my hand and a small cooler for our lunch.
He agreed to remove a change of clothes or two from the hockey bag and leave the bag along with his extra shoes and rubber boots. And we shared my small cooler. But the rest he brought and it filled the back of my 22 1/2 foot Islander. I crammed a bunch of it into the cuddy but he needed to have all these tubs and bins next to him.
I used one lure all day, and we caught the same amount of fish in the end. How do you approach this? I don't like the entire deck piled with these tubs of who-knows-what.
I am going to say, to anyone I invite or wants to come along, that they are allowed one backpack or bag for gear, and one tackle box and 2-3 rods. We can share one big cooler. Is this fair?

"how do you approach this?"

Well I would start with "hey BOZO.... there's NO WAY you are loading all that junk on my boat" and finish with "you can bring this and this and maybe that".... if he threw a fit I'd follow up with "ok well we'll take YOUR boat today" When he said he didn't have a boat I would go back to my opening line.... Glad to hear you finally are getting to use the boat.

I would say, " Pack light, I have everything you need except your clothes, and your rod. So try to keep it to a dozen lures, 2 rods, and snacks/drinks of choice."

When I took my parents to Canada for a week in spring, most of their stuff was at their trailer. So I told them to bring their clothes, rain gear, and coffee thermos.
We used 50 jigs, 10 spinners, and 3 spoons, all week.

I would also start calling your friend by his new name, "Mr. Cabelas."

Been there. Easily handled. Sorry bud.......we're not taking the Queen Mary today. I have enough room for a tackle box, a couple of rods and a jacket. You can put your stuff in boat cooler, the rest is staying in your truck.

Re: How much stuff do you allow others to bring onboard?

what in the world could he have in all those backpacks and bags?

generally, tackle including extra rods is fine. My tackle boxes (including flats) have a wide variety of stuff in them and we fish for a wide variety in the bay in a single trip. And it would be hard to sort them out for one trip. But no need to bring the deep sea tackle if all you'r egoing to do is fish the flats.

I usually get my crew to combine coolers--one food, one beer. I have fish boxes built in, in the smaller boats I bring one fish cooler, too. They bring ice.

Clothes--what you are wearing plus maybe one t shirt. rain/foul weather gear is OK. Maybe a small bag for sunscreen/bug spray etc. Best ot have all that in one gym bag.

No fishing gear allowed on our boat, but I've never had anyone bring more than a towel and a cooler.

I went beach camping with a work buddy once. One night on the beach how much do you need? Some water, some food, tend, fire wood and thats it. He brought enough for an expedition to the top of Everest. I think its just being inexperienced. When I started boating and camping I packed everything I could think of and then one day had the phony that less is more.

It doesn't take much to make my 18ft fish and ski feel like a sardine can. We always utilzie the boat cooler which is more than enough room for beer and water all day. I allow one extra bag on the boat no matter how many people are going out for the day. The bag can be big, but it's the only one so make it work. This rule was invented after several outings with us and another familes and there seemed to be a bag for each person. Next thing you you know you can't move around the boat.
The one bag rule has worked well. You'd be suprised how much a couple of moms can get into a single beach bag.

Fishing has never been a problem. everyone I've ever taken has limited it to a single tackle box a a couple of rods.

My rule and pretty much everyone I know has a rule of one bag, 1 large or 2 small tackle boxes and a shared cooler. Plus a fish cooler

My boat is only 12' so all you can take is what you can carry in 2 hands. makes it simple when there is NO Room.

I would say bring all the food and drink you want but sorry only 2 fishing rods per person. What's with all the clothing? Sounds like you'll have to put a life vest on him.

Re: How much stuff do you allow others to bring onboard?

I talked with my other buddy today as we may go out on Friday. I asked him what he was going to bring.
He said he was bringing a small tackle box and 2 rods. That's it. And asked if we could use one cooler for water and lunches and bait.
I think my problem rests with my one friend and I will assume if I take 3 friends fishing he would be the only one with all this stuff. I still don't know what was in those plastic tubs.
