The police's catch all for whatever you are doing in a motorized vehicle (boats included), here anyways.

No speed limit secures our freedom on the water. If there's a speed limit then they should build narrow "streets" for us to drive down like cattle. Be responsible. My speed is my own responsibility and I am responsible for the people I could affect. I live on the gulf side of Florida and to say there should be a speed limit would be to say I can only go 5 miles from my dock. Just take my 225hp and gimme a 4hp and send me on my way. I really irritates me when people support the ignorance of another. Do your putt putting on little lakes and channels on your own time. The rest of us are going to go do some actual boating, fishing, diving, and exploring. Tell me about a speed limit *phhhhh* I should open palm slap the taste out of your mouth. Get with the program. You're responsible for the safety of your passengers and the people you will affect. Sorry this entire thread just put me through the roof

Completely agree. If I wanna go fast, I take on that responsibility. Leave the already ridiculous Government intervention out of it. Ya know, I had to pay an extra $2000 to have a fence put up when I had my pool built, and had to put sirens on all my doors and windows due to some moronic Government regulation. I cant even leave my tripple sliding glass doors in 3 differant rooms open to look at my overpriced pool because the sirens go off whenever my doors are open. I watch my kids. Why am I being punished monetarily due to some other idiots negligence????? It is utter stupidity to punish everyone.

I thought a boat running at full speed on plane creates less of a wake than cruising with the hull in the water?
Speed limits in congested areas common sense, out on the open lake:(

Down here we don't have any speed limits in the middle of our lakes so you just need to manage your speed for the conditions and what is in front of you. We have a LOT of bass boats out on the Harris Chain that can and do hit 60+ mph and will do that speed during a tourney. Fortunately everyone is aware of their surroundings out here so far. If I see someone out there jamming it in a Scarab or Velocity I like to pull out of the way and watch them go screaming by with their 454s wide open. we even have a few twin 454 boats blasting it up on the lake.

I'm an old timer and I'm still here. Why? Because the world I grew up in wasn't so safe and anticeptic as this one. The kids nowadays are so protected and disinfected that they have no skills to avoid danger, nor do they have any immunity to diseases. I firmly believe that living in a more dangerous and dirtier world taught me to sense danger and gave me the antibodies to fight off illnesses. Our ( protected ) kids will be lucky to get past 30.

Speed limits don't save the lives of responsible boaters; idiots will speed and take chances with others lives reguardless of the law or lack of law. Too much regulation only punishes and weakens the general public by making everyone compiant with rules intended for the few.

I accidentally blew by a canoe at 60+ one day, probably about 150 feet away. On the way back down the small lake I idled near enough to them for conversation and apologized. They said two things. There was no wake to speak of so it didn't bother them at all, and the fine mist blowing their way on the breeze from my rooster tail was refreshing.:D

My dander is up a bit too. Punishing everybody for the stupidity of a few is just not right. Speed is fun. When I'm on it, I could blow over pretty easily if I hit a large wake. Watching for the wakes, and handling the boat to safely negotiate them is my job, not the states.

I agree with Blevins. Freedom on the water is one of the reasons I own a boat. Responsibility and courtesy gauge if I'm going to run 5 mph or 60mph. The situation limits my speed

Well said. Speed IS fun. And doing the right thing by others sharing your environment is rewarding. Over regulation is unnecessary, unenforcable and expensive. I'd rather keep my freedom to enjoy using my toys than see governments enforce regulations designed to save idiots from their own stupidity.

Mate, real Aussies avoid the over-policed Hume! If you're here again, take the Pacific Highway along the coast... :D

I blasted across lake eustis in my friends 34' skeeter cat w/twin merc optimax 300's. We got close to 100 mph. Took about a minute to get from the town eustis to the dead river. He has some property over on harris and goes there often. Let me tell everyone on here, he's a responsible dude, and we had a hell of a time. If you want to keep everyone safe a "blanket" speed limit on the water is quite a ways down the list. Outlaw auto-mobiles and make everyone ride three wheeled bikes. Ban smoking, I just saw that UF just made the entire campus smoke free, I'm not sure what the fee is but geez....

Speed can be a lot of fun but surely deserves respect. The majority of people prefer relaxation and quiet over an adrenaline rush. I prefer the adrenaline rush.

I try to never infringe on the rights of others and give respect to distance and courtesy. On the flip side I don't respond well to uptight whiners who think they have a right to limit my freedoms while I operate within the confines of the law.

In my book, you can't have too much power or speed.

Speed limits constrain the people who are responsible.

Knuckleheads will still do dumb things. They'll just be illegal.

Safety equipment, including vehicle design, is the only reason survival rates are holding or improving.

I don't feel bad for the captain -- maybe the passenger, if he really didn't want to go so fast over waves/wakes.

Exactly more laws only restrict law abidding citizens...People that break the laws will still break the laws. Boating recklessly or too fast for conditions is already a ticketable offense.

Re: How Fast is Too Fast? / VERY Lucky!

At least in Michigan, the speed limit in the non-no wake zones is 55 MPH on inland lakes. On the great lakes, no speed limit. It's pretty much open water out there.

Now, they have a Hot Boat weekend just north east of us on the Muskegon River. The police & DNR pretty much turn their backs on the 55 MPH rule. Their logic: People didn't trailer their high horsepower really fast boats 2,000 miles to do 55 MPH. We're just there to make sure nobody drinks & boats, or does anything incredibly stupid. Most of the people that participate pretty much know the limits of themselves & their machines. Most of them.
T
he 55 MPH speed limit isn't really enforced, anyways. I've never seen a watercop with a radar gun. As long as people aren't being careless with their wakes & near other boaters or doing something obviously reckless, the authorities pretty much leave them alone.

Re: How Fast is Too Fast? / VERY Lucky!

This was a holiday weekend.. We got out on the river early which was a good idea.(cause when it got too busy we was ready to go). Lots of fast stuff out there today running pretty fast on a congested river.. They was kinda in a group and looked to be racing.. I even saw a one of those hydrofoil racing boats flying around.. If they don't hurt me or others. I don't care how fast they run, but it did seem like it was a bit dangerous with all the folks on the river today.. Boats have no brakes... If they kill themselves well there is no law against that.. Less idiots using up the worlds oxygen :p

Speed zones make sense in certain areas for safety, but beyond them there should be none.

How fast you can go depends on the conditions and the boat.

During the River Ranch FL get together they didn't ticket anybody for speed but they gave out a lot of tickets for lining up together and racing.

Hey Steedy during the Florida PowerBoat Clubs Daytona to ST Augustine poker run i saw radar guns on boats and on bridges.

Re: How Fast is Too Fast? / VERY Lucky!

I agree, nobody shoulod have any reason to go any faster than 20 or 30 MPH on the water.

Same thing with cars. No reason at all for any car to be able to go faster than the speed limit. There's even a few cars out there capable of OVER 100 MPH. Why do they need that?

Did you read the bottom part of the article you referenced, about all the kids drowning in the pools? There's no need for pools in my opinion, if you can afford a pool then you can afford air conditioning. Very few kids are killed by air conditioners.

With the right conditions i can get my boat up to 55 mph. I enjoy doing so!! I also enjoy going fast in a car!!! HOWEVER... I make sure that if something does go wrong only me and the willing participants stand the chance of getting hurt.

I think a WAY bigger problem is the IDIOTS that put their 5yo kids in a tube on a busy stretch of the intracoastal on a holiday weekend.
I cant tell you how many times I have seen kids floating in the water with boats on plane whizzing by only 50 feet away... WTF???

Re: How Fast is Too Fast? / VERY Lucky!

Personally I don't care how others boat as long as they aren't endangering others. If they want to do 100+ on a wide open stretch of water with no obstructions in sight, go for it. Just don't go flying by me 20 feet away. All it could take is hitting a wake the wrong way or a steering cable to snap/bind and you just ruined a lot of peoples' days other than your own.

And I don't understand how people can say that their boats handle wakes better at speed. Are you guys talking about a wake from a small boat at idle? I would hate to see newbs read this and think that the best option for hitting a wake is at WOT. A lot depends on the size of your boat, the weight, shape of hull, etc. and of course the size of the wake.

There is a lot of tug boat traffic on my local river. Hit those wakes at anything above a crawl (if you're in anything under 23' or so) and you're going to be airborn and I doubt the outcome will be pretty.
