how far should an outdrive shaft go in??

Im out of ideas on how for this thing sould go in . I finely got an alinement tool and the front of the motor was about an inch to high but the shaft still seams to short only goes in an inch or so seams like it should go in further . its a mercruiser 370 with 120 out drive. dont know if I have the wrong coupler or what any feed back would be helpfull.

Make sure it is in forward gear and rotate the prop just a tad. It should slip right on. You may have a problem with ratio in the end though.

yea I can get the out drive on there all the way but the shaft is only going in about an inch at most . I was told it was told the coupler was not lined up properly but the tool goes in with hardly no friction. Im out of gas on this thing i dont want to blow out another coupler. so any body got any ideas Im open to sugestions.

There are 2 different shafts of different lengths. You could have the wrong one if the drive is on all the way.

Ayuh,... That's it,... The old GM I4 motors used a shorter input shaft, with the old MC-1 drives...

I think All the GM, I-motors used the short shaft, both 4s, 'n 6s....

thanks for the response just measured the shaft and um it is the short one,it was 8" and there is a longer one that is 9.5" so thanks for the help . now just got to order the part.

Did you mean to type 470 instead of 370? Because there is a 370 model Mercruiser.
