How does the clutch dog work? 77 J35

Trying to figure out how the clutch dog system works before I tear into it on a 77 johnson35. Does the pinion gear and forward and reverse gears always stay in contact and the lobes on the dog shift between the f/r gears on the spline, thus turning prop shaft? Or do the gears separate from the pinion gear via clutch dog and dog pushes gear into pinion?

My skipping problem has increased to about 3 second intervals and need to replace/replace fast. I assume I need the dog and the forward gear. What about the pinion gear? Thrusts washers? Dog cradle, shift lever or another of that other stuff? Detent balls and spring?

Any advice is much appreciated.

fw and rev gears always turn via the pinion, the clutchdog is the physical link to the propshaft for the selected gear.

Have a look when you open it up, hard to tell, it might just be a worn forward gear as the past owner might of done the clutch dog.
Sometimes but not often the problem is located to be only a nice cheap part

Yes, pinion is always in contact with both gears and the clutch dog slides one way or the other to engage the gear. Here's photos of stuff I have laying around from a V6 gearcase.

Best thing to do is get an OMC Factory Service Manual, then take it apart and see what's wrong with it.

Most people looking for the first time can't believe how little wear of the dog and gear can cause it to jump. This one was worn out long, long, long ago. Probably didn't drive any more at all, but sat there and chattered.

Thanks guys, really helped out with the video ad photos. Got it taken apart. Looks pretty much like the photo above. It appears that I ay be able to flip the clutch dog around.

If you flip it around and try it, I hope you post the results. I'm really curious if it works.
