Trying to figure out how the clutch dog system works before I tear into it on a 77 johnson35. Does the pinion gear and forward and reverse gears always stay in contact and the lobes on the dog shift between the f/r gears on the spline, thus turning prop shaft? Or do the gears separate from the pinion gear via clutch dog and dog pushes gear into pinion?
My skipping problem has increased to about 3 second intervals and need to replace/replace fast. I assume I need the dog and the forward gear. What about the pinion gear? Thrusts washers? Dog cradle, shift lever or another of that other stuff? Detent balls and spring?
Any advice is much appreciated.
