Re: how do you attach lure to line?

In north idaho we have lots of pike, state record is around 40lb caught out of coeur d alene lake and a few tiger musky aswell. I'd say i use a steel leader 80% of the time, especially when using dead bait. Some people will wrap their leader around the smelt with two treble hooks but that can kink your leader, so i went to using a hook made by mustad, it has two hooks like a V and can be as long as 5 inches. Make your own leaders to fit the size of what your fishing with saves mulla aswell. I won't make them shorter then 24inches for dead bait and around 8inches or so for lures. I had a good run using smelt on the bottom, waited about 30 seconds to set the hook and by then it swallowed my 18 inch leader and bit through the mono. If you think the action of the lure is effected you could try using a beaded swivel between your leader and lure.

Mostly i use a small snap swivel on mono for bass and panfish around here in Indiana. When we travel to Northern wisconsin and are targeting pike, it's always a 9 inch steel leader on minimum 15# test. My dad likes the 20#. I think it's like trying to cast a cable.

Only time i ditch the swivel around here is if i'm fishing crankbaits with absolutely no luck - then I'll tie on directly and every once in a while it'll change my luck. I use the palomar for pretty much everything. Considering using the trilene knot as well but i never remember how to tie it in the field.

I actually sent myself the pictures off the site I referenced above to my mobile phone for exactly that reason! I've always used a clinch with only some problems being stupid and trying to pull 5lb. catfish into boat on 4lb. mono without net/gaf. But it's time for a "big boy" knot I think now.

I don't have to worry about teeth cutting my line. Nothin' ever bites my hook.
