Re: how do i make my boat smooth and shiny?

I love my Vaseline.

AZ sun does wonders. .

My wife caught me with a Jar of Vaseline and Rubber Gloves on the other day in the Garage. She hasn't learned yet about the Vaseline trick I have been doing. I had a little explaining to do. She said have fun. I said you Betcha'

I dont think its greasy. I take a shammy towel and buff it out after applying it. Takes about and hour to do and I do it once a month. Makes my boat goes faster at the top end as well.

hahaha. I left the remaining vaseline sitting on my trucks tailgate all day, it was over 100 again. So this afternoon I pick up the tub and see it's mostly melted. Of course, i shook it to see, well the cap wasn't on right and I got splorked on my chest lol.

Ok here is another trick. Its best if the vaseline is melted. I leave it in the Hot Garage and it melts it nicely before applying. I also have put the Jar in a Pan of Hot watter. Trust my never try microwaving. It doesnt. Work.

Heres your problem the thing that makes paint shiny is that it is smooth so if your paint isn't smooth it will never be shiny, the vasaline is a band aid on the real problem, you need to buff the boat with compound then wax it and it will be shiny for years to come.

Have you tried it? It works as well as any polish or cleaner. Just did mine again. Last time was 3 years ago.

My boat is Waxed and Not Oxidized. No problems there. I like glassy look and it prevents water spots. To each of their own. :)

Re: how do i make my boat smooth and shiny?

where can i buy awl grip?

Most auto body supply stores sell it. West Marine sells it and all of the other components to with it (reducer, thinner, prep-sol, etc)

How do you apply AG? Is it done the "roll and tip" method? I've seen some brush/roller paint jobs on boats that looked spectacular!

You can do the roll & tip with great results (that's how my boat is done) or you can spray it. Look on YouTube for videos on how to apply it. Best money I ever spent on my boat. My wash day for the boat used to take 3-4 hours for a great cleaning. Now takes 45 minutes. 95% of the dirt comes off with a hose.

About $100 a quart or around $200 a gallon

and if i roll or brush it is it obvious that i rolled/brushed it?

No. It takes almost 12 hours for it to flash and it flows out like glass

I don't know. You would have to look into it. You could always just clear coat it and buff it out.

i have a 1983 vanguard banshee. the paint is really rough. I know i need to wax it and it will help, but what is the best marine wax to use, for best shinyness (is that a word?) it doesnt have to be really smooth i just want it really shiny :)

Ayuh,.... Sand it down, 'n repaint it...

If you want to reclear your boat, go to the auto paint suppliers and explain what you want to do. They will explain in detail about what products, thinners, reducers, spray pressures, etc you will need to get the best result. Spray cans? NO WAY! Even a cheap $25 spray gun will give you 10x better results than a rattle can. For that price, you could even throw it away instead of cleaning it!

Get the latest infor from the professionals. In fact, go to a few body shops and get prices for the clear coat. You might be surprised how cheaply you could get in done, and done in a day or two. You may have to do the prep work (sanding/scuffing), but they do the painting every day. Estimates are free. Bring a pic of the boat and dimensions for them.

Re: how do i make my boat smooth and shiny?

i work right next to a body shop, so ill go ask my friend sammy who is an excellent body man/painter, im 16 and on a low budget, lol, so i try to be cheap. i got a big compressor adn access to spray guns, ACTUALLY! i got an even better idea! im gunna leave it for the summer (maybe do the vasaline trick once) but ill take it into the shop at my school, I can get clear, and spray it all for free! got to love our public education system. ill have to buy the clear, but at least ill have all the tools and equipment at my disposal. well thatnks every one, im gunna do the vasaline trick this summer but come september ill take it into school. happy boating!

if you coated it with vaseline and now want to repaint? you will end up with fisheyes, etc. you have to get the vaseline out of the pores of the fiberglass or the paint will not come out. talk to your buddy at the body shop. you will need to use copious amounts of wax/grease remover, then wetsand the exterior and then paint.

Just like you do with any paint job. I used to run a body shop, this is NOT a valid reason to not do it. If you are going to a shop that doesn't prep for a paint job, find another shop.
