Just remember people train dogs and cats train people.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

A little update on the cat situation. After being gone for a couple days over the weekend and no hosing, the cat was of course back when I returned. After a couple good sprays, it has been making itself scarcer.

I don't really care if it is on the property as long as it is not bothering me and now it seems to be keeping its distance. Now it tends to avoid me instead of coming to me every time I step outside, jumping on my wife's car window, trying to come inside ,and I don't think I mentioned that one time it started to climb my ladder to where I was working in the boat.

There is one spot it likes to lie under some shrubs along the house. I want to try to get it to stop doing that so I will try spreading the hot spices as mentioned above, and keep spraying. Seems to be helping, time will tell.

It must be hard to be so tough. Every time I see a so called man who can't confront a cat they are wannabe men. Pepper is all you needed. Down here the same type are the ones who think they have to have pit bulls to be a man.

Thanks for your friendly advice. Now I can get rid of my pit bull. Pepper. Got it.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

I would think talking to the neighbors would be the first step. It is unacceptable for anyone's animals to be on your property.

Don't get me started on all the dog owners who walk their dogs with no leash in my neighborhood and think it's just fine for them to run all over yards and "introduce" themselves to me or my 3 year old. I have no problem with dogs, it's "dog people" I can't stand.

had a problem with a lady in the neighborhood who would walk her dog and let it **** in other's yards and not pick it up. I was out cutting my yard and she lets it **** across the street in a friends yard.

me: you gonna pick that up?
her: what?
me: are you going to pick up your dog's **** out of betsy's yard so she doesnt step in it on her way to get her mail!?!
her: I dont have a bag
me: why the hell dont you have a bag for when your dog ****s in other people's yards!?!
her: *shrugs shoulders* walks off
me: *shouting* be prepared cause its coming back to you!

she walked away in a different direction and then wouldnt come down the block anymore. reason? couple weeks later I saw her going to her house from a new route she was taking and she lives a block away. gathered up all of my neighbor's golden retreiver poo from his "poo area" in the neighbor's yard and tossed it all over her yard and driveway and left a note "pick up your dog's poop when you walk it". heard from several other neighbors she now picks it up...but then she just dumps the bag on the ground in front of whoever's trashcan. seriously?

The most economical cat-preventing car cover you can buy is aluminum foil.
Another trick is to put the super sticky fly paper all around the auto on the garage floor.

both of those solutions would infuriate me. I mean why should I cover my car in aluminum foil each time I'm done using it. stepping in fly paper wouldnt make me happy either.

I'm starting to think I have animal rage issues lol.

lakelover, try putting several little rocks in a can and shake it (as loud as possible) when the cat is bugging you. This trick has worked for me, the cat takes off so fast the fleas can barely keep up with it. I used this method to train my cats not to sharpen their claws on my sofa. Thanks for caring about this (obviously) neighborly kitty enough to look for real solutions =D

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

Soon after the wife got a new car a cat owned by an unknown neighbor used it for climbing practice. I would never hurt an animal but had to solve this quickly. I got a capture cage and set it near the car and the next day had a big yellow tom cat captured, Next I got some BLUE paint and painted it up with blue dots and then set it free. I think the owners got the message that their cat was going places they didnt want him to go and I never saw the cat again..

Thanks. That might work exept I think the cat might be at least partially deaf. If you come up behind it, it doesn't know you are there until it sees you. I just took the friendly kahuna123's advice above and sprinkled pepper around liberally in the area where I really don't want it hanging around. It seems the hose spraying has discouraged it from coming up to us anyway. (At least me.)

I'll report back how that works.

Pepper? What kind of pepper? I've used cayenne pepper before and it worked great, not to season the cat, just to sprinkle on the ground.

You can get a big honkin shaker bottle of it from Sams club for $4-5.

That being said, there is no such thing as an "outdoor cat". The same rules should apply to cats as do for dogs. This cat has irresponsible owners and I'd be calling animal control every time it was on my property. People with "outdoor cats" are just feeding strays in my opinion.

Sure there are. Cats and leashes do not mix, like dogs and leashes do. You can't put a cat in your back yard and expect it to stay there like you can with a dog. Some cats are outdoor roamers and cannot stand to be indoors (cruel to make them). Cats are territorial animals and once outside, need to be outside.

Quoted from the local Humane Society. AND I QUOTE

"All areas of Volusia County have leash laws. An animal, dog or cat is not permitted to run loose. Do you have a fenced yard for large dogs to safely play in? For all breeds... are you committed to walking your dog three times a day? Every day? For the rest of her life?

Cats live longer, more healthy lives if they are kept inside and on a leash if taken outside. Sine most cats do not leash train, are you willing to purchase and clean a cat box?"

So, in this means you must follow the law, regardless of whether you like it or not. Not an option. If your cat is on my property, I will be calling animal control. I do not have cats because I do not want to have to worry about their urine smell. I should not have to worry about someone else's cats waste. I have several neigbors that have cats, and they keep them inside.

There are even documented cases of domestic cat diseases making their way into the Florida Panther population. This is a very bad thing, especially for an already endangered species.

Keep your damn cats inside or dont have them.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

A little update: The situation has improved. The cat has been around the property, which I said doesn't bother me, but I think my retraining has improved the pestering situation. Black pepper has kept it away from the side of the house and it is keeping its distance now; I saw it pooping on the front lawn a couple days ago and discovered its preferred bathroom area, sprinkled pepper, and haven't seen it back there. In fact I've seen it across the street at its owners' house more lately than ever. :)

Neighbor chat is still an option if it relapses.

That's why you don't put it in the back yard. Wouldn't put a ferret or hamster their either. Same thing.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

Several years ago, we had to try several things, each time escalating. We'd just moved t othe neighborhood and had 2 indoor cats ourselves, but neighbor cats kept trying to mark our patio.

We didn't know who's they were so we couldn't just talk to the neighbor.
Several shots with a squirt gun through a screen door didn't phase them, even afte we escalated to a super-soaker. We couldn't use a hose from our living room.

So I had a couple gallon pails of water that I threw on the invader when he was close enough. That helped for quite a while. Later I debated between adding susdy ammonia or pepper sauce to another pail of water. Either one would have done the trick.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

I'm a huge fan of calling animal control. We had a neighbor with 2 outdoor cats that loved to crap in my kids sandbox and fight with my cats through the screen. Had a nice fight in my living room when one screen ripped out. Let me tell ya, that's a hell of a way to wake up at 2AM. Between me and the neighbors we caused enough grief that she finally moved to the country where her outdoor cats could become hawk and coyote food.

Animal control will give you "have a heart traps" and remove them.

It's against the law for you animal to be outside not under your control, plain and simple.

Trap em and send them packing!
