How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

Here's the problem.

Our neighbor's cat seems to have adopted us, and especially me (a lifelong avowed cat hater). It first started hanging around the spring, which didn't bother me too much, but over the summer, it practically has gotten to practically live here hanging around our doors. If I go outside, it starts to come to me, especially if I have food. I can't even sit and enjoy a bite to eat on my back steps or take a break with a drink without it coming and pestering me. I've taken to spraying it with the hose every time it gets within range, and it does run away, but not far, and is back too soon. It's really getting annoying.

The neighbors across the street are long time ones and we are on quite good terms with them. They have seen me spraying the cat and said to my wife they thought it was funny. They have several cats and a dog, all are very well cared for. They know the cat is over here all the time. I don't know what they could do anyway, short of keeping it inside, and I know that won't happen. It's an outdoor cat, and is at our doorstep as soon as we get up and is around when we go to bed. One day I was carrying stuff in and out of the back porch with the door propped open and on a trip out, the cat had come into the porch and was under the table.

I can see the jokes coming, but I don't want to harm the cat and wouldn't. Gotta figure out something workable short of doing that or damaging the neighbor relationship.

My wife just got home from work and was sitting in the car in the driveway listening to something on the radio before she came in and the cat jumped up on the edge of her door in the open window. Looks like I'm gonna have to have a talk with the neighbors.

repeated spraying with water, I would have never believed it either, my mom uses this to train her cats, a common spray bottle from the laundry or kitchen placed strategically anytime she wants to break the cat of a nono she says no in a low firm voice and blasts the cat, she had 3 cats and they were all very well mannered, even after I stole the squirt bottle a time or 10:D

My grandmother used to put mothballs around the outside of her house and I asked her why. She stated it keeps the cats away from the house. You have to decide what you hate more, the cats or the smell of mothballs. Hope this helps.

look up a product called "Shake-away"

Its like carpet fresh, except it smells to the mooching furry rodent like the scent of things that would eat his "awww isn't he cute" behind for dinner!
You know, bobcats, wolves...large predatory animals

I had a similar problem, but the cat took to sleeping on the convertible top of my car. It was a cloth top, so I frequently had pulled threads. Then my garage started smelling like cat urine. After telling the neigbor a half a dozen times to keep it out of my garage, I called animal control. In Florida there is a leash law that applies to ALL animals, including cats. So they came and took it away. It came back and 3 times later I took it to work with me and released it and it never came back.

You can only give them so many chances before you have to take drastic measures. I wouldnt condone hurting the cat in anyway, but when it starts infringing on your property, you have rights.

That's your first step. Bet between you and your neighbors you come up with a solution.

That's what I stepped up today with a full aggressive assault. Soaked it three times since the car window incident.

cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin powder... Good and hot, spinkle about the place and wait for the cat to start licking it's paws. Actually used this on my own cat once, and didn't have any problems with her on the kitchen counters again.

But i also introducted a cat to a barn in Alabama, after it used my new futon for a kitty litter box. It was as nice looking barn that i left it in.

Don't know about the neighbor's cat but I ACCIDENTALLY got rid of my wife's cat by shutting the garage door on it. It crushed the cat hard enough to make it defecate it's intestine......I knew I would be in trouble if I did not do something clever....so I put on a pair of latex gloves and put the intestines back where they were originally. Needless to say the poor little critter died a few days later but the wife never had a clue!

Sounds like your door is not adjusted properly. I would look into that just in case you forget to pull your car all the way in. You wont be able to hide that so easily. Hope you dont have any kids.

Wow... I'm no fan of cats, but I just don't know what to think about this...

This happened years ago before safety eyes.....the safety clutch was correctly adjusted not to crush a cardboard box....I guess that proves a cardboard box is tougher than a cat!

Ha. I eliminated the "eyes" because mine is over sensitive. Must have been one hell of a box I guess. I have spent a lot of time to adjust mine so as not to hurt anyone or anything, but still go down. I doubt it would kill a cat.

I am not big fan of cats, and I probably wouldnt lose any sleep if one went missing, but I cant beleive the door wouldnt crush a box but would kill a cat. Cats are pretty skittish, and I find it hard to beleive one would sit there and let a door drop down on it. But I wasnt there, so I wont judge. For all I know you did everything possible to save it. Maybe your box was just too tough. You might have needed a softer box for adjustments.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

I've heard a spray bottle with some ammonia is much much better than just water. Don't think it's terribly toxic but should get the point across.

That only works if you actually see the cat on a regular basis. The cat I had terrorizing me, I never saw. I cant squirt a cat I never see.

Let me understand this...you let the cat suffer for a few days?!? Sounds cruel. I'd have fessed up and had it euthanized right away.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

so you have a cat that gets sprayed repeatedly with water and then still comes back?? you will have to take drastic measures, so sorry...but then again, I hate cats so I could care less.

we have multiple feral cats in our neighborhood that I play guerilla warfare with. helps me with my throwing/shooting skills. they come on my property and I throw a stick at them. that doesnt work, out comes the b-b gun and they get a double tap to the butt/body. usually sends them running. there's a few that know the gun means pain and just run the second they see it.

edited out ending rant.

Re: How do I get rid of a neighbor's cat?

I started with throwing small rocks at it, but the dumb thing just chased the rocks. Now I'm trying the spraying with the hose. Already got it once this morning as it sat on our front steps. I've hesitated to use the BB gun because I don't want to accidentally shoot it in the eye or something. My BB gun is pretty inaccurate.
