if you are talking about the upright pvc posts, mine have 2 or 3 inches clearance. enough to get the storage cover down between the hull and post.

Far enough that the widest part of the gunwale will clear and narrow enough it will not float over the fenders. As stated above remember to leave room for the cover to go on if necessary.

That makes sense. I'm trying to get them close enough to the hull at the stern to help center the boat on retrieval

Just did the same thing with my trailer a few weeks ago. At any launch with a side wind, or on a river, having the guides adjusted properly will help with a faster and cleaner retrieval. I had to raise my bunks because the hull was getting crossed up on the keel rollers (I have both bunks and rollers on my trailer). When the guides were too wide, and the keel getting caught up on the rollers, the bow wouldn't track straight. This not only delayed my loading, but made me look like and idiot at the dock wading in chest deep to straighten the azz end. Now it loads much, much faster........and straight!

I take mine off when I polish the boat.......I never get them exactly the same when I put them back. I shoot for about 3/4 of an inch. They've been up against the hull before, and it's never given me any difficulty loading or unloading the boat.
