It is attached to the left side of the dash here:

From the bottom it looks like this:

Looks like a bottle opener...that's why it's in front of the passenger side, to prevent operating while under the influence.:)

Pic 4 is a little dark, but if there are two wires out the back of it, it could be a broken courtesy light of some kind. It looks like two screw holes that would have had a cover lens at one time.

WELL! I believe we have a winner... (I still like the bottle opener perspective though)

Thanks ray/rock... when I get it off the boat I will have to clean it up and see if it still works

A thingymabobber would be about 2 inches wider.

Obviously an adapted license plate light turned into a courtesy light. Technically, not a thingamabobber. It's a Whatchamacallit.

No, no, no. A Whatchamacallit has more flex to it and makes a zuuuuuurup! noise. That's a Whoozit, obviously!

After almost a full year on this site I thought I had most of the technical terms down pat....thanks for crushing that thought and proving I have SOOOO much more to learn.

Faria, fine maker of marine equipment, makes a nice muffler bearing gauge that you can put in place of that doohickey.

Well now I am befuddled...is it a whoozit or a whatchamacallit? I thought whatchamacallit was a candy bar...

Someday when I'm feeling sad, I think that I will come back to this thread ... "gehsnicksly-rehoovinator" - That's just poetry :D
