Re: How about the draft??

Even if it's just for a year, it might teach some respect to some of them. Not all, but some.

They have no respect nowadays.

How about all them gang bangers that want to kill each other.

Give them a year in the service to find out how bad they really are.

Send em down to Camp Lejune for a year.
They will learn real quick about respect or what the inside of the brig looks like.

Or how about Camp Pendleton in Ca.
They will see they ain't near as bad as they think they are.

Yea bring the draft back with no loop holes to go through to get out.

No draft dodgers this go around.

I'm sure there are a lot of fighting men and women, that don't want to be where they are but, they go and serve their Country and die for it sometimes, and those that say I won't go cause I don't agree with this or that, then leave and go to another Country where you are welcome.

GRRRRRRRRRRR

I better hush, I am starting to rant.
Sorry JB. :(

Start the draft again??

All you'll do is fill Canada with 'draft-dodgers' just like the 60s & 70s. Many of them are still here. They never went back after the 'amnesty'.

And once again Canada will let them stay.

Re: How about the draft??

I was drafted and did three years, afterwards 30 days a year for 15 years. All the girls were drafted as well. Thats where the melting pot really bubbled... Many of them did administrative jobs, there were a lot of platoon mothers. We would come back out of the field and they had taken care of our mail and often they fixed us something to eat. They also took care of the kids who were having a hard time. Many girls became specialists and trained us in weapons and machinery. I'll never forget my diving and under water explosives trainer. Draft may also mean national service, afterall not everybody is cut out to be soldier. There is more than one way to serve one's country.
The basic attitude switch we need is that it is a privilege to serve one's country not just a duty.
Today when I think about my best friends, it is always the ones I served with.

I agree Muskyone. I'm about to send a check to the IRS and the thought that I can't tell them how to spend it really bothers me. I'm more than willing to help someone who's in need because of circumstances beyond their control. For example I'm happy to help someone who's lost his job to cheap labor overseas, but not some lazy no-good goof-off who's expecting a handout.

Yea bring the draft back with no loop holes to go through to get out.

No draft dodgers this go around.
And if they take away too many able bodied youth we always have plenty of people moving from the real south looking for work.

Re: How about the draft??

This is an interesting topic. I would have to say that as a History Teacher, I believe that todays youth would benefit from serving in some type of government program whether it be the military or some type of Conservation corp or the like.

As a tax payer, I don't want to pay the taxes that would be needed to provide for a military of this size. It has nothing to do with rather I support a war or not. (As an American citizen, you are obligated to follow those individuals that have been elected to run our government and follow their lead. After all, a democracy is NOT mob rule nor do you get to pick and chose which rules you want to follow)

And lastly, as a retired Coastie, retired medical care is hard enough to get from the government without throwing more individuals into the fray.

You missed the point ->Fly Rod<- 'They didn' come back!
They became Canadian Citizens!

Strip them of USA citizenship & be bannished?? They knew that when they left! ->Our gain - your loss! These people didn't even 'jay-walk in Canada, let alone commit a crime! Why? Instant deportation to the US of A

To some extent I agree with your statement but not when it comes to dying. In my opinion we surrender some freedom and contribute some labor to support a common good. But a life is beyond what we can demand of another citizen. I don't trust the government to spend my money wisely but I can live with that. I can make (hopefully) more money but I can't bring someone's brother or father or mother or sister back to life if they die as a result of a bad presidential decision.

Maybe. But I think it's more likely he would have had me shot for refusing to kiss someone with a mustache. :)

Don't ever edit my posts & leave out ->Your Statements!! when replying-unless You so shamed by your own words. Read what you wrote one more time...

->>>in my opinion we surrender some freedom and contribute some labor to support a common good.

You & people like you deserve to have your civil rights stripped from you. Maybe if you lose 'em you might learn how to appreciate them after others die saving them for you!!

Re: How about the draft??

Hi WoodRust,

I do sometimes say things that I later wish I could take back but after reviewing my posts I don't see anything in this thread that I'm ashamed to have said. I simply don't see the need to partially restate my opinions in order to respond to yours and I believe I got your statement correct and complete, except for the angry face. I'm trying to understand your hostility but am at a loss as to what I said that could have offended you. I was only trying to explain why I pay my taxes and obey the law.

bob

Hi WoodRust,

I was waiting for your response before turning in for the night because I had hoped to end the day on a better note, but I can see that's not going to happen. I don't think continuing our conversation is going to be productive so good-bye.

bob

Freedom is not free. And college is not free. Hmmm...... No wait a minute freedom is free for some and so is college.

College grants tied to national service?????????

Citizenship is handed out like high school diplomas anymore. It has no meaning. I think that "national service" be that military or civilian for two years would do nothing but help the youth understand what it means to be an american. All they see and read is how miserable a country we are and that creates a generation of self loathing slackers that don't realize that everything is earned not given.

my 2 cents FWIW...

Re: How about the draft??

tlands,
In this thread you stated, "After all, a democracy is NOT mob rule nor do you get to pick and chose which rules you want to follow)"
First, a true democracy is indeed mob rule. If all of the people in a group decide (vote) to do something (burn down a house) they go out and do it.
Second, we do not live in a democracy. We live in a representative republic. We elected the leaders and therefore we are obligated to follow them.
