Hot but not overheating

I have a 1994 4 cyl 40 hp Mariner Magnum. Hot water is coming out of **** hole on starboard side and only exhaust is coming out of the two rectangular slots under cowling on the back of motor. I thought water was suppose to come out of the two slots. Is this normal? The motor has no t-stat and after it starts up it takes about a minute for it to start pissing. When I installed a new impeller I took compressed air and cleaned out the pipes. Should I just leave it alone? It is not overheating (so says the alarm). Thanks.

I have the '92 version of the same engine. Only exhaust is supposed to come out of those two slots. How hot is hot? Can you hold your hand under it without pain?

I can hold my hand under it for a while (can see steam sometimes). I will take temp reading this weekend. How hot is it suppose to be?

If you can hold your hand under it for awhile, it's not too hot. If it's really and truly steaming, it's too hot but you shouldn't be able to hold your hand under it either.
