I have a new to me Honda BF 100 - 10hp 4 stoke. I think it calls for standard 10w-40 motor oil. Question is this.... can I use, or would there be any benifit to using a Valvoline 10w-40 4Stroke Motor Oil.

The container has it labeled as a 10w-40 4 stroke motorcycle oil "for superior wet clutch protection". Maybe a stupid question but I'm not an engine or oil guy & it just seem logical that a 4stroke oil would be better in a 4 stroke engine? Thanks for any feedback!

Re: Honda BF 100 Oil Question

Water-cooled 4-strokes (outboards) should run FC-W 4-stroke oil. The W rating means that those oils are specifically formulated with anti-corrosion additives which can be very beneficial in the marine environment.

So... 4-stroke oil for use on land, while probably adequate in a pinch, is not the "best" choice for an OB.

Re: Honda BF 100 Oil Question

I use Honda Marine 10w-30 oil. I only change the oil once a year and I get great comfort knowing that for a several extra dollars a year I am using the absolute correct oil. Where else in the outboard world can you get that kind of feeling for so little money.
