seems like everytime i go out to the lakes..there is always somebody holding up the ramp.Today i went fishing with the wife and kids. When we got to the launch there was somebody there about halfway up the ramp...leaving.....so we wait....they were moving equipment around.latching boat down, talking....then we see the tailgate drop down....they had to put there boots on....i am starting to get impaitent now...after about another 5 minutes, they finally pull out.....leaving a bunch of trash right there on the ramp........so after fishing about 3-4 hours pull up to ramp to get truck.walking out i notice somebody going to back in....I get the truck....there still there....loating and moving stuff around....finally after ten minutes, they proceed to back down.
my question is ,...is it proper to say something to these type of people? There are different areas to prep your boat before the launch.i can launch and load my boat in 5 minutes each way.Nobody ever had to rell me not to hold up the ramp...just seems like common sence!!!

common sense aint common though...

Over here I've said something to them before. Not rude, just pointed out that there's an area to load up in and show them where and explained "ramp etiquette". Most simply don't know.
Over there-I'd do the same-as long as they were sober and didn't look likely to pull a gun...

2 boats tied off ready to retrieve, I go to get the tow and trailer, so does the the other guy. 3 pull in to launch, start preping, and neither of us can get in to load our boats on the trailer. Considering there are only 2 ramps what were these boneheads thinking? I asked both to open space for me and the other guy to get ours out, and one guy gets POed, they other moves (barely) How hard is it to figure. You ain't launching until there is no boat in the water. Idiots.

Why ask?? If they have any courtesy or commone sense they would not do that to begin with. I find asking a question to a stranger who is an idiot just leads to a fight with a strange idiot and who knows where that will lead.

Just bide your time

One time I a saw a jet flea take 20 minutes to launch his flea...I assume it was only 20 I was launched and leaving while he was still sitting there starting and stopping his flea.

Depends on who it is and how many there are.
Since I do not like altercations, I tend to talk loud enough to my friends, that the idiots can hear me. Usually they get the hint.

The mountain lake that we go to a lot is part of a canoe trail system. We had the same thing happen with the idiots pulling out a canoe right in the middle of the launch ramp, take 10 minutes to tie it down, and then sit and change their boots before they pulled out. It seemed like they were trying to be jerks. I would bet money that if someone were in their way they would complain up a storm!

Re: Holding up the boat ramp!

3 bay launch ramp, guy is taking up 2 of the 3 and taking his good old time. He finally exits and I back in. In one fluid motion I disconnect, jump aboard, trim down engine, start engine, and back off (about 1 minute for whole process). Wife tries to pull out but there is an old guy trying to back in - nearly backed the trailer into my Denali!

I jump out of boat that is now being held by friend to dock and run to him to help. He is flustered and is now trying to break his axle on the ramp drop-off! I offer to back it in for him and he tells me to mind my own business.

At that I ask him to pull ahead so my wife can back out and then he can take up 2 of the 3 bays. He agrees and does just that!

Why can't people practice to back their boats and trailers before getting to the ramp? Is that too much to ask for? Please, be proficient at backing before pulling it forward! PLEASE!

My wife knows that if she doesn't learn to back up, she can not pull it forward by herself. That is why I have a date at the local shopping center after hours - for some practice time!

I once had to wait for 10 minutes for some guy to idle his boat motor while it was on the trailer.

He drove the boat on the trailer, attached the rope, and then sat in it for 10 mintues with the motor idleing and talking with his friend. Finally he pulled his boat out, still dont know what he was doing. Idiot.

Ken

Ah...backing...some people will never learn to back their trailer. I see the most amazing things at the ramp. Some folks zigzag back and forth across two ramp widths in 100 feet.

And these don't look like first-time boaters, either. How you can boat regularly and not be able to back a trailer, I will never understand.

When I get home, I have to back down a 100' driveway that is shared by my neighbor. He generally has his truck and boat backed in, and I park in my back yard at an angle to my garage. If you do not do it exactly right, you have to start all over again down the driveway, and there's less than 6" of clearance between my fender and my neighbor's nice new truck at one point. It took me about 10 tries the first time, but now I do it in one, every time.

How do these folks get their boat backed into their driveway?

Say something. Those people that are that stupid / inconsiderate haven't noticed you're waiting on them. Ask if it's their first launch and if you can help them speed it up a little. They'll figure it out.

Re: Holding up the boat ramp!

I taught my eldest son (17) to back the boat using an empty industrial zone car park and some witches hats. He was keen to learn because he knew once he was inch perfect he would be allowed to take the boat out on his own with his friends. He can now back well using either the mirrors or by swivelling his head. After showing me his skills on the ramp he's away on his own, leaving me and the insurance company to worry a little more! If everybody used an incentive to learn to back well instead of an ego-driven attitude that shows disrespect to other ramp users we'd all be a lot better off IMHO.
BTW - single Jet Ski trailers are really difficult to back compared to big boat trailers simply because you can't see them easily and by the time you can see a wheel in a mirror the trailer's already halfway to being jack-knifed.

yup.... I now get the honour of teaching my girlfriend to back up our new RIB. She wasn't allowed to tow the other boat as it was too heavy for her licence in the UK so I had to do it.

Re: Holding up the boat ramp!

I use a semi private ramp in the area where my camper is. Yesterday, I went to put the boat in, there is usually just a few trailers in the area, lots of room to park, a two lane(steep) launch ramp and a single lane(shallow) ramp.

There is a truck with a twin Jet Flea trailer parked blocking the two lane ramp and the back of the trailer only about six feet from the end of the single ramp. I get my boat around the parked trailer and start launching. About this time, the jet flea owners show up. I launch the boat, pull it around and tie it off on the far side of the courtesy dock so that the ramp wont be blocked when I pull out.

As I return from parking the trailer, the dad from the jet fleas nearly runs me over trying to get his trailer in the water. He lovely cow of a wife and daughter are doing donuts off the end of the dock so that its all my wife can do to keep the boat from banging into the dock.

I told the guy that they were in a no wake zone and the lake patrol would ticket them. He told the wife and daughter, they didnt give a ****.

My wife wanted to leave, but I wanted to see them pull the jet fleas out. The mom was so huge, the flea she was on was really low in the water, the daughter wasnt quite that big. After they power loaded and smacked the bow of the fleas into the trailer, they didnt want to get off so dad pulled them out. He had an older Dakota that must have had a manual tranny with a weak clutch or he didnt know how to do it. At any rate, it took him nearly 3 minutes to get the trailer up the ramp. :)

Re: Holding up the boat ramp!

The lake near my house is probably the worse at having a bunch of inconsiredate people. Actually if I do go there on the weekend, I use the one used by the fishermen. The other one is used by all the rec boaters they are just plain %^#$%&$@#%#$^&$%&^%. The first few times I went, I almost had a heart attack each time, but now I know that is jsut the way it is.
For the most part the fishermen ar alright, even if they do prep their boat at the ramp they are pretty fast. But no the others.

Re: Holding up the boat ramp!

for me i dont have a problem with somebody not being very handy at backing there trailer in...its just sitting there half way down the rampdoing all there rearanging and preping.i try to get along with everybody. When you compound the wait with leaving there trash on the ramp...the few bad ones can ruin it for everybody else.Kinda like if any of yous are hunters too, everybody is watching us waiting for a reason to put an end to it.
