I have a 1988 Mercury 100hp Outboard that I just smack a submerged log on the river really good with. The motor still ran and the housing didn't break. I noticed while still on the water that the motor was much harder to get into gear but still got up to speed and I had no reverse(when I put it in reverse it went forward). When we got it out of the water we noticed a little rod that runs the length of the shaft had pulled out of the lower unit and bent straight off. What is this rod for? Reverse? Water pump? How screwed am I? Really wrecked a nice day on the water. Thanks!

It is the shift shaft and the LU will have to come off to fix the problem. Hope the shaft can be fixed or a new used one found.
