From Thomas Sowell

In Shelby Steele's new book, "White Guilt," he mentions an encounter with a white liberal who fiercely defended the welfare state programs and policies of the 1960s.

"Damn it, we saved this country!" he all but shouted. "This country was about to blow up. There were riots everywhere. You can stand there now in hindsight and criticize, but we had to keep the country together, my friend."

Before we turn to facts, we need to understand the vision. This is a vision of the world more precious than gold. To those who believe it, this vision is a treasure beyond price because it is also a wonderful vision of themselves -- and they are not likely to give it up for anything so mundane as grubby facts.

For those liberals who lived through the 1960s.......

http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/thomassowell/2006/05/30/199170.html

Re: History

I do not doubt these facts. I deeply disagree with the implied interpretation.

Re: History

What Rolmops said.

Except some of the "facts" are open to debate as to interpretation.

Off the top of my head, I'd guess that most of the "democrats" that voted against civil rights legislation were southern dixiecrats, part of the "solid south" that rebelled against Lincoln.

After Johnson, most of them switched to being republicans, as the Republican party moved further away from Lincoln's ideals, and closer to George Wallace's.

We can indeed learn from history, as long as it is accurately rendered, and conclusions consider more than just labels in their analysis.

No question *everything* so-called liberals did was not proper or effective, and in some cases produced unintended consequences, but the same can be said for conservatives. The key is to learn from mistakes, and adjust accordingly. Not to discard an entire philosophy because of an individual mistake.

Re: History

What exactly has been modified within the democrats approach to civil rights that has changed since the 60's except to repeat and exacerbate the mistakes of the past?

Look at Ted Kennedy's solution to our immigration policy. It reads exactly like the one he worked on from the eighties. What have they learned?

Re: History

What we should learn from history is that we don't. Every generation is doomed in their arrogance to make most of the same mistakes as their forebears.

Re: History

It has slowly become apparent to me over the course of my life that JB is dead-on!

As for democrats becomming republicans to align with segregationists, explain Sen.Robert Byrd (D/VA).., former klegal of the KKK, who voted accordingly.
If 34years is able to teach liberals anything, it is that their party throws the needy under the buss right after each election, because of how quickly the duped forget.
