Re: High winds pull new boat off trailer on highway

...I had thought that the truck's full coverage insurance would also cover the boat and trailer. Nope. They wouldn't touch anything not specifically mentioned in the policy. At best, my tailgate would have been replaced because it was damaged by the rolling trailer. That was an expensive lesson to learn, my friends. All of my toys now carry separate policies. This mistake will NEVER happen again!

Don't know what kind of insurance you have (I have Safety) but every policy I have ever heard of covers anything you are towing. I got a separate policy for my trailer but that was just to cover theft.

Accidents like that are rarely just "the one thing". I forgot chains a couple of times, but nothing happened so who knew but me. Chains are for the OTHER people on the road anyway in case something happens, to keep the tow-er's stuff from reeling in anyone else's stuff with collateral damage. Usually a collection of things happen, like neglected bearing maintenance then a longer tow than normal then a hub failure then wheel loss then no shutdown area THEN the trailer rolls, scenarios like that.

I have never heard of a policy that covers what you are towing. That is why you get boat insurance.

Im with you Bruceb,

Insurance companies do not "give away" anything. If the item is not listed on the policy... Its not covered.

This is my experience based on over 30 years making a living selling insurance.

Tazrig, If someone at Safety told you that. I would suggest you get it clearly stated In Writing.

Maybe in CA and TN but in MA anything you're towing is covered. I don't have to own it either to be covered. If I tow my friends lawn trailer it too is insured by the vehicle it is connected to. Once you launch the boat obviously then you are not covered for the boat anymore.

Congrats to you folks in MA, If that is how it is. Tn policies DO cover trailers. BUT for liability only, NO physical damage to trailer or its contents.

I suggest you have your agent put it in writing so if a claim arises and the person handling the claim is from out of state you will have coverage. The coverage may come from the agents wallet or his E&O insurance, but you will have coverage.

It really is the way it is but trust me we don't call our state "Taxachusetts for nothing. $200 annually just for a lic plate for my boat trailer, excise fees, registration fees, inspection fees. 6 years of higher insurance premiums if you have an accident that you are more than 50% responsible for. Get into a second accident in those 6 years your rates go up even higher for another 6 years + what you owe from the first accident. By the way those higher premiums apply to all the vehicles (including my boat trailer) you own not just the one you were driving.

Read your policy.

"Under Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 the term “your auto” also includes any trailer not described on the Coverage Selections Page as covered under those Parts." (quoted from a MA policy form)

Collision and comprehensive are coverages 7,8,and 9.

It matters not to me if you follow my advice or not/ I was just trying to be helpful and clarify in a least argumentative way.

Best of luck to you and i sincerely hope you never have a boat or trailer loss of any kind.

Did you have a boat insurance policy?

We had to buy extra insurance for all our ski gear as the value was over what was covered by our policy.
