High RPMs slight whining noise --- lost speed.

I took my 82' SeaRay 240 (single prop Ford 260) out yesterday....

everything was good on the way out stayed between 2500-3000 rpm - went about 2 miles - stopped for a few hours to fish ...THEN

cruising back at about 2500 we were going for about 15 minutes and the rpms spiked up to 5000-6000 and it made a whining noise and slowed way down...

I put it in neutral and the engine sounded normal...tried to throttle back up and it spiked the rpms up again but did not engage fully....took it back down almost to neutral and was able to keep it about 1200 and moved slowly back to dock ---

No overheating, everything else seemed normal aside from not going over 1000-1500rpms

I don't think we hit anything --we did some turns in the water - don't think they were overly sharp or crazy and that was about 10 minutes before it slipped....

Any advice?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Yer drive description is inadequate,...

What, Exactly, preferably with serial numbers is yer motor,..??
Vintage, induction, 'n displacement are mandatory...

'n what, Exactly is the driveline,..?? Inboard,..?? I/O,..?? Which model,..??

You've spun a prop hub, or smoked the motor's coupler,...

Til We find out Exactly what you've got, that's the Best I can do...

Sorry - I have a 82' Sea Ray with MerCruise Ford 188 I/O (not sure if it original engine)
it is a Sundancer ....

Ayuh,.... So try yer spare prop, 'n if it still Slips,...

Ya gotta pull the drive, then the motor, to replace the Coupler...

They usually Die from bad alignment due to rotten transoms, or stripped splines from lack of grease...
