Re: Hey! Did you see that?

Not to spoil a good story, JB, but MSNBC has been reporting all week of the red cross, salvation army, and local churches helping out in Biloxi, among other places, bringing supplies in. They made a point to say while these folks have had a presence, no one from any government agency had, as of Friday at least.

That's kind of the point, isn't it?

And if you are worried about your boy GWB getting some bad publicity, I'd suggest you let him know that playing a guitar in San Diego is probably a bit tacky during the worst storm to hit this country in a century.

Or taking five days to visit the area, and only what could be described as a limp response by the Feds and FEMA.

Thank heaven for the volunteers! We'd have been in real trouble had we relied only on the professionals to do their jobs.

Howdy, Ralph.

Red Cross and Salvation Army workers were in NO before Katrina hit.

Say, PW2. With gangs of armed crooks in control of the city and murdering cops and tourists, do you think the security folks would allow the President to visit?

Just what were you doing on Tuesday? Does that have anything to do with whether you give a damn about NO? The man is doing his job. You sound like that brain damaged jerk on the NBC Concert.

No, PW2, this is not the worst storm to hit the US in a century. It is the worst storm to hit the US in recorded history. It is purely stupid to think that FEMA should be fully prepared to deal with an event that is predicted to hit once in 500 years. The taxpayers wouldn't permit that level of preparedness.

JB,

Sorry to say you are wrong. There are some who think we should be taxed to such levels as to be prepared for a volcanic eruption in Wisconsin. They are called liberals but in reality they are socialists or communists.

JB,

I am not suggesting they could have solved the problem quickly--only that they acknowledge the problem, get communication going and let people know that someone is in fact in charge, coordinatng efforts. Whoever that someone is.

And I am not suggesting that GWB should have put himself in harm's way, but this was a huge storm, covering several states, and clearly was going to require a major federal response. We knew this long before the storm even hit.

Homeland Security and FEMA appeared to be caught off guard, for whatever reason, and a leader's job during a crisis is to instill confidence that there is in fact someone in charge, they have some sort of a plan, and they are in fact competent to do the job.

Guiliani knew this during 9/11, and whatever specific things he did, or didn't do he did in fact inspire confidence that there was someone in charge, and they knew what they were doing.

You can argue that this wasn't GWB's job to do this, if you wish, but if not his, then whose is it, and when are they going to step up?

We knew this long before the storm even hit.
So why didn't the Mayor and Governor get everyone out?

Why are these NO Schools busses sitting in water?
capt.flpc21109012015.hurricane_katrina_flpc211.jpg

Why didn't the Governor declare Marshall law right away and call in the Guard?

FEMA has 2,600 employees. They are there to support the states not take them over. We operate under a separation of powers and federalism in this country. I wonder how many people who now absolve the Governor and Mayor of any of the responsibility for what happened were defending Jeb Bush when he caught heck a few years ago after a big Hurricane for not being better prepared...

How about the Mayor and Governor just like it was on 911 and after every disaster - just like it is now in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

The situation only changed when the Feds (w/o authority) did pseudo federalize the effort and took over. (You've heard a lot of linguistic gymnastics going on about it because everyone knows that it is not really legal but no one will press the issue)

That picture alone will doom Mayor Ray Nagin.

Edit: Forget what I just said, there's no one left to vote for him.

Re: Hey! Did you see that?

that picture makes one wonder why were drivers not avalible? did they even have any on weekend standby? do most school districts?
not to bust anyones FEMA bubble but on Sunday the mayor of new orleans declared a state of emergency and president Bush declared the LA,MS and southern FL a federal disaster area openinng the door to federal aid. here is a small copy.

Federal Emergency Management Agency teams and other emergency teams were in place to move in as soon as the storm was over, FEMA Undersecretary Michael Brown said.

the rest can be found here.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/08/28/hurricane.katrina/
but I hope they are also focusing on the builoxi/gulfport and pascagoula areas as well. the scope of this storm staggers the imagination.

Re: Hey! Did you see that?

Federal guidelines to States are that they must assume Federal aid will not arrive for at least 72 hours.

Anybody could have and would have driven those busses. I saw one 16 year old kid interviewed who stole an idle bus, loaded it up with people and drove it to Houston. They all pitched in for Gas along the way.

The pretty AA ex-Bill O'Reilly employee's 22 year old cousin did the same thing according to her interview with Greta Van S last night.

NGOs staid out because of the security situation according to an interview I saw with some leader of the Red Cross

Nice "cheap shot", we've seen and expected nothing less.

TRUTH is a forgotten ideology in this country.

The TRUTH came out this week. Those that had the power to do something blew it, and they know it. The media will do everything, within it's power to hide, yet, ANY thinking American knows differently.

Those that "BLEW IT", we're self serving, appeasing, democrats.

I'm sick of this PC crap. Huh? Shoot ANYONE carrying a gun? What about the well armed citizenry being part of a solution to the problem?

If I was stuck in NO right now and had to go out on the streets seeking food and water, you'd better believe I'd be carrying at LEAST one gun, and I would hope not to have someone sitting far away in his dry and warm living room watching the stilted news reports calling for me to be shot for trying to protect myself when the authorities are unable to..

Which is it, Homerr? Take care of yourself and don't rely on the government or disarm yourself and hope that the government takes care of you? I know which one I would choose and I'm surprised to hear someone with your apparent conservative outlook say something like that.

Sheesh!
