If you were to read a book about European history, would you prefer the names left original or translated to English if possible. Some named for profession can be translated easier like Smith. If you have an opinion on the subject, I'd love to hear

I like it to be as original as possible, but I still want to know to know the significance of the names origin.
e.g., Con Iguldens (sp?) Julius Ceasar and Genghis Khan tomes.
Great reads.

I voted some . . . I'd prefer to leave them all original, but I have been reading some early American history ( 1600s), and the Indian names simply stop me in my tracks and make the reading very slow and laborious. I don't like giving in, but I have to admit it is negatively impacting my enjoyment.

European history inevitably requires some translation of the names of people and places...I think.

For example Carlos Quinto refers to the Spanish king Charles V. The original names do give some flavor to the stories in history, but may be distracting and cumbersome to read.

Somehow this reminds me of when I read the Leatherstocking Tales, by James Fenimore Cooper...action stories on the american frontier dating back to colonial times...the names were wierd!
