I have an 88 Bayliner 2.3 L that I just bought from someone. He said it ran last summer but that a starter needed to be installed now. He gave us the starter, we installed it but it still won't start. We have also installed 2 new solenoids and a brand new battery. The motor will turn over but still can't get it started. Also when we hook the cables up to the battery, it tries to crank, even with the key off. What can we try next and why would we have constant power like this? As you can tell, we don't know much about boat repair and would appreciate any help.

That problem needs fixed before even thinking about. You could have a defective solenoid, or ignition switch or something even wired wrong. At this point no way of knowing.
Here are a couple of wiring diagrams that may help you sort out the problem
One other not for the future. If you don't know anything about boat repairs or boats, don't buy one that doesn't run. But since you have, I would recommend you start looking on ebay for a set of OEM service manuals for your engine and drive. Not seloc or clymers.

Thanks for the info and diagrams. Yea, we bought the boat from this guy for a great price and because he said it ONLY needed the starter to be put in. We took his word... Lesson learned.
