Hello I purchased a 1987 200 hp mercury black max serial number 0B197898 it lost spark so checked stator was bad 3985454 A36 was on it. But it calls for 3985454 A32 or3985454 A35 the difference is between 1/2 inch and 5/8 lamination thickness . So I don’t know which is the right one.

A 398-5454A16 and up are all 16amp stators and same thickness, the A at end of part number is a series number. So a 398-5454A16 and up will replace it,as the A32 and A 35 are same thinkness.

My flywheel is grey and the one that was on there measures 5/8 but it not the right one.

It also states that they require the use of a voltage regulator mine has this which I assumed was a rectifier

it actually shows up as an '86... if there is no regulator yours is a nine amp... 5454 A7 is what you need.... if its a 5/8 you can run ANY 16 amp stator with or without a regulator... some say that you can't run tha 16 without a reg but with good battery program it won't hurt a thing.. if you have any electronics and/or use tha trim a lot it will keep any sign of over chargin' in check.. i ran 16's on everything i had/built from stock 150's ta hot rod 280's without a reg and never a problem....

Thank you for the info so mine has this ( picture attached) which I assume is a rectifier

correct......... if it has a reg. it will be about tha same size mounted directly behind tha flywheel in tha middle/top of tha block...... looks like you will have one.. tha red and yellow in tha plastic sleeve should go to it...

Ok so the problem I am having is the stator that was on mine was a 3985454 A36 which is not correct so I don’t know if I need a 1/2 or 5/8 lamination for my motor

tha lamination thickness is irrelevant to motor.. it is to flywheel.. ya need ANY 16 amp stator ta go with your flywheel.... tha normal stator used with tha 1/2 is justa 9 amp (really old) stator.. i don't remember any production V6 that came with a 9 amp after '85/'86.. maybe even earlier? below is a complete list of merc numbers you can use.. a lot of these are superceded numbers

i think CDI uses 174 5456-16
