Need a little help on how to go about repairing my transom. Saw a crack along the edges of the transom and outboard motor bracket, thought it was just the gel coat cracked. Removed outboard bracket sanded all the way until I reached glass, and saw this. I was redoing the transom anyway. Inside skin has already been removed this is the outer skin. It has me stumped as to how to go about repairing. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like you've got some sanding and fiberglass layup work to do on that outer skin.

More info on your situation and some 'before' pics might help the guys here who really know their stuff better assess and advise.

Thank you for responding so quickly sopwithcamel74, and racerone. I will take more pictures. A little back story, transom outer skin had some cracks in gel coat, and had a couple soft spots on the deck back by the transom. Knew it was time for transom replacement and stringers Racerone, would I need to lay any glass to the inside of the outer skin before adding the new pieces of plywood? Need transom to be solid. pair of 200hp outboards hanging off the back.

Are they 4 strokes.----Do you plan to keep the boat for a long time ?-----I would use composite material or a layer of carbon fiber in between FOUR sheets of 3/4" plywood.-----You are not limited to the original thickness on a transom !

2 strokes , will keep it for a little while until I can get a larger boat. This one is 26ft not counting the outboard bracket. Sounds like a plan. Would be my first time working the carbon fiber how much different is it tan working with glass?

Will do. Thanks for the advice. I’m sure I’ll have more questions as I proceed.

I see this as a wonderful opportunity to build a bomb proof transom.-----Make it 3" thick.----Cut back the stringers to fit.-----Speaking of stringers the core on them is likely rotten plywood too.

I would grind off the wood you havent ground off yet, apply a layer of CSM and 1708 with poly, then butter up the new transom wood and clamp in place. when cured, bevel the cracks on the outside, and build up with a few layers of 1708, then grind/fair straight and re-gelcoat

make sure the boat is on a cradle
then measure......remeasure, re-remeasure
make paper patterns of the existing stringers

take lots of pictures

cut the old stringers out of the hull....... and spend 3 days grinding the old tabing

Hopefully you have boat supported so it does not distort during repair.-----When I did stringers on a SCARAB SPORT i removed one side of the 16" stringers.-----Removed the rotten plywood AKA " beaver puke " wood dust and plywood flakes.------Replaced the plywood and glued the glass back in place.-------You might use a different approach.

Boat is sitting on its trailer. I do not have a boat cradle. Is the boat not supported by the trailer? Does anyone have plans for a boat cradle. Can straps be used to go around the boat so that it keeps its shape?

No to the straps

Trailers often do not have enough support to replace stringers

Google boat cradles
