Would like to see some of your pics of when you restored you weathered teak.

Being the boat I have is unknown to how the teak was maintained prior, I opted to strip it with snappy teak nu:

I still am not getting the nice look after doing this + re oiling with meguaires #46 teak oil. I know it is not top of the line but it was all I could find.

How vibrant should it look when I orbital sand it? I feel the wood is not nice inside either but it was not weathered as bad as some wood that I have seen come out real nice. This makes me think I am doing something wrong.

The biggest trouble you may run into is preparing the wood. Good prep may even allow a lesser product look great. And as you see above, good prep (sanding) + good product looks killer.

Take this with a grain of salt, but Wolman makes a great deck stripper that may do the trick (http://www.wolman.com/product_detail.asp?ProductID=2). It works fantastic on redwood. Alternately, a good powerwash may be all you need.

+1 on the pressure washing. Makes it look new. Then a few coats of teak oil will help keep it looking that way.

I'll have to dig up some pics later.

As said before, prep work is going to be 90% of what makes the final product look great. It needs to be sanded down to bare wood, removing any old finish (150 grit); then finish sanded twice (400 then 800). That will produce a baby's bottom smooth surface that will take in the finish treatment correctly and give you the beat result you can get without replacing the wood.

I use Danish oil instead of teak oil. I tend to get slightly deeper penetration and longer lasting finish with it. You should be able to get it at any big hardware store for less than $10.

Rub it in with a soft lint free cloth and let it dry. Then do it again. For the best lasting finish you can add a clear topcoat of polyurethane. That will help seal out any moisture for quite some time. Not necessary though, but you'll have to keep that wood dry as possible after every trip and re-oil every few trips at least.

Please don't pressure wash Teak and never orbital sand it. If you intend on walking on it just leave it an oil finish and don't sand it with anything smoother than an 80 grit. Bronze wool rubbed with the grain works very well on an oil finish that you might walk on. If it's decorative trim then a smoother sand is great and the oil finish is very easy to maintain.

nope. dont have to start that low of grit, just always helped me get down to the bare wood faster. ending with 800 should have left you a great surface to finish. you might need a tinted oil to give it a better look. watco danish oils come in several tints, but natural is my preference for teak.

i have to agree with an earlier post that if this is a platform that you'll be walking on, I wouldn't get it too smooth. you could even add clear sylica sand to your oil to give it a rough surface for traction. doesn't take much, and make sure you get some that is very close to powder size and feel.

I found this to work best and bring out the richest look. Clean with snappy teak-nu. Orbital sand with 150, then hand sand with 400. Foam brush on 1-2 good coats of LEMON OIL!!!!!!! Yes this really brings the color out but it won;t last more than a few days. Once dry, coat with Minwax Teak Oil. Looks fantastic. Not sure how long it will last........

I am dissapointed with the meguires #46 teak oil, it is very low quality and smalls like stoddard solvent and peppermint oil. Does not give a nice look whatsoever.

PS it was the sanding that really helped the most.

How 'bout a cut of that Hungry Howies? Sorry, don't have any pic's but I only had a few pieces of wood on my boat (1985) & the wood that was there was in really rough shape. I sanded it down to get the weathered'ness (if that's a word), off & I stained it with minwax dark teak stain then clear polyurethane. I like the way it looks, I'll try to post up a pic.
