Re: help with plot for mystery

Oceans are deep when away from the continental shelf where hydro thermal vents occur(average ocean depth is 12,000 feet +) any explosive tectonic event that would send ejecta at velocities sufficient to embed them in the hull of a boat would be detected by seismographs before the sand reached the surface. Currently there are about 40,000 miles of active spreading centers ( Mid ocean ridges MOR?s) throughout the oceans. These areas have very little to no sediment as the crust there is new and hasn?t had much time to build up sediment and there are a couple well documented spreading centers that are terrestrial like The Great rift Valley of Africa.

The seamount idea is plausible since they are projections of more than 1 kilometer high, and Guyots are flat topped seamounts that were probably high enough to break the surface of the water but have been eroded below the surface again by wave action they are mostly in the Pacific, if that is where you are writing about. Sea mounts and Island Arcs are usually formed around an underwater subduction zone (the Aleutian Islands are an island arc as well as to the north and west of the Hawaiian Islands is an island chain from the hot spot that formed the Hawaiian islands).

If you are looking for a medium as to how sand may become imbedded into a hull. I would go with hitting a sand bar.

If you are writing a scientific thriller then could I suggest the appearance of a coral reef that hasn?t been mapped yet because it is a new formation? ( but it wouldn?t be silica sand ) Although in actuality it takes a very long time to form reefs, and the planet is still at the end of a cool period which does not promote reef building activity, and CO2 levels aren?t high enough to support rapid growth and formation of reefs.

Given enough time climate change and rising greenhouse gas levels like CO2, which is a primary component of CaCO3(calcium carbonate) which is what corals and marine life builds their shells out of (except for Diatoms and Radiolarians which use SiO2 to form their shells) . Will bring the planet back to its normal warm state with an abundance of CO2 in the atmosphere and dissolved in the oceans to support the type of CaCO3 deposition our planet saw in the Phanerozoic and Cambrian periods.

best of luck with your endeavor

Thanks for all that! Interesting stuff.

But, my site is offshore California, so can't use hyrdothermal vents or coral reefs (at least in THIS plot). And at this point in the writing, it would require major demolition to move my site somewhere else.

In fact, I'm zeroing in on the seamount scenario--and have been reading about the types, including guyots. Nice source of sand.

Everyone here has been so creative and generous with suggestions, so I hope I don't try your patience by clinging desperately to my plot need to have some mechanism propel water/gas with even the tiniest sand residue upward to impact the boat hull.

How about: a pressurized container of gas/liquid on the seamount summit, part of the experiment. Sabotage causes an attached nozzle to shoot the stuff outward, entraining some seamount sand on the way upward to the surface. I guess it's a matter of pressure/force. One more subject area in which I'm not expert. And googling gets me only so far.

Anyway, does the above scenario strike any of you as plausible?

Thanks yet again.

Re: help with plot for mystery

ps. Anchovie boats are pretty big...42 to 65 footers...Same boats would go out for live squid for the fishing fleet...

Hey, can I follow up on the anchovy boat info? I'd really like my anchovy boat to be small enough to be handled by a single fisher. Real small-scale operation. Is that plausible? And if so, how small must the boat be?

If it's not plausible, what's the smallest crew an anchovy fishing boat requires? And how small could that boat be?

Thanks!

PS: I can't seem to make the multi-quote work, nor can I import a smilie. Help?

To multi-quote click on the "+" button on the right by the reply next to each quote, they will turn red when this is done.

Then scroll down, click "reply" and proceed to type whatever you want to add after each quote.

For the smilies, just click on "user CP" on the top left, then go into edit options, misc options, and switch that to "standard editor".

Looking forward to seeing what kinds of plot twists you've got going on. Maybe add an undewater colony of highly intelligent previously undiscovered marine life?:p

Hi again,

I have to say, ANY means of having an explosion/surge of gas/jet of liquid etc. on the bottom that would be able to propel bottom sand up and into the hull of a boat on the surface seems implausible to me. I think the water would be far too good at dispersing the energy.

How about having a villan (or toadie) diving near the bottom/sabotage site when explosion goes off (prematurely ?)... they'd get a cloud of sand blasted around them. They'd be rescued and brought onto the boat, but when the boat is abandoned, their wet suit is left behind, providing something to be discovered/analyzed (the sand caught in it). Maybe the injured/pleading toadie could be fed to sharks to show what a bad dude the main villan is (if so, toadie should previously have been made to be a likable sort)... But, I'm not sure if there are suitable toadie eating sharks lurking off the coast of CA... Might have to just tie an anchor to his leg.

Thanks for the posting info. Let's see if my smilie shows up...http://forums.iboats.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Well, once I get my headache-inducing plot twist figured out, I'll see if I can work in something more fun!

Okay, understand about the dispersal issue. But I'm stubborn (meaning, I've already written so much involving this plot twist and I hate to let it go), so I'm going to throw one more scenario out there. Let's say the pressurized tank on the seamount summit has a hose attached--a means for filling the tank from a ship. So then, when bad guy does sabotage, the hose becomes pressurized and takes the gas/liquid to the surface? Or maybe a pipe. I can get my seamount summit to within, say, sixty feet of the surface.

But still: adding toadie wetsuit to my list of alternatives.

Toadies/villains as sharkbait....there's likely a market for that!

West coast is a young coast (steep) with a large subduction zones to the north and transform boundaries in the south and the east pacific rise in the sea of cortez.

which is a tectonicaly active area however the only geologic events that I can think of not only would imbed the sand in the hull would probably make the boat dissapear as well but that would be another mystery

Yes. And also, I need the bad guy to play his role--sabotaging the experiment, thus precipitating the event that damages the boat. Can't blame it all on mother nature. Also need the boat to survive so my geologist can study the embedded sand.

But do love subduction zones and active geology. As you say, another mystery.

Thanks.

Well, could make a great science fiction story!

I'm having enough trouble trying to keep my science nonfiction, in a mysterious way. :)

And who says that is "ficton" <insert evil grin>

Hey your plot is in Ca, and a place where earth quakes are normal.
Have the bad guys doing thier dirty work on the ocean floor when a major quake hits
and shoves a water steam straight up and explodes whatever equipment they have.

Yes, we sure do have quakes. And if I need to set off a seafloor quake to fix this plot twist from hell, I shall. Thanks!

Okay, that one goes into my alt-plots file too. Nasty toxic bad guy=good drama. Thanks.
