Re: Help update my trailer

Good to know. I was wondering what that style of rear bunk did and how it works. 8)

Is that enough boat for that motor? And, what is with the two trolling motors?

The boat is a 1968 FD that I bought new. It is rated for 40 hp. The 40 hp. Mercury motor is the only brand that had a short shaft. Rear electric motor is for back trolling and rear control. Front electric motor is hand held remote control, a primary electric motor. I will also put a 1991 Evinrude 4 hp. deluxe on the transom for heavy current when needed.

You could cut those spindles off and bolt a modern axle onto the trailing arms using square U bolts. You would also have to drill and mount some sort of locating pin to prevent the axle from sliding back on the control arms. A complete axle with hubs mounted can be had for less than $100. You then would be able to purchase some proper wheels and tires. After all is said and done though you would still be out over $200 if you farm out the mounting of the axle. Thats not even counting the the lights, new fenders, new coupler, paint, etc.

The trailer is fixable, but I also agree that you could probably find another trailer to do the job with less work. You will probably have to buy one that has a worthless boat hull on it, but thats okay.

Re: Help update my trailer

I actually converted the Harbor Frieght folding utility trailer to haul my 12' Sea Nymph. A couple of 2x4 bunks, three keel rollers, and a flea market bow stop and I had a decent trailer.
I have to agree with those who point out that by the time you put good rubber on the trailer you have you have invested way too much.
