Re: Help update my trailer

Here is how the pipe is rigged up. Personally, looking at the trailer behind the point the pipe is welded on, I think that the trailer was wrecked in some way up front because on the right side, the side rail is flexed and there is a strip of metal underneath bent and flexed about like the front got crushed back or something.

Here is the really old coupler

Why do the wheels need to be replaced?

Except on Wheelbarrows,.....
Those Wheels haven't been Used since the Early 1960s.........

Your Flying down the road at 70mph, on a Holiday Weekend,+ You Blow a Tire, Taking the Wheel with it........

Just Where,+ How are you going to find a Non-existent Replacement Wheel..........

Try looking for a Replacement,.. Right Now,.. On the Web,.....
I've got $100.00 that says you Can't Find 1.......

The Only thing that's even Close is a Wheelbarrow Wheel,..........
And I don't believe you want to Run a Wheelbarrow at 70mph........
Besides,..Wheelbarrows run a 5/8th" Axle....I'm pretty sure that Your's is Larger.......

It Looks like the 1 in the pic. without the bearing cap is Already Junk,....
I see a Crack or Hole in it.....

They don't have to go if you stay with the same hubs. Any new hubs will be a four or five lug bolt pattern for the wheels.

The trouble with the wheels and hubs you have is that you cannot change just a wheel in case of a flat. You have to carry an entire wheel/hub/tire assembly with you. If you only trailer locally, no big deal. But, you will not find a spare-easily. Flats only happen on Sunday and holidays.8)

The coupler may be serviceable. It should have a "tang" that holds the clamp wheel in place.

The trailer probably was backed into something. That pipe is probably a heck of allot stronger than the original tongue was.

BTW, you're asking for trouble dragging those eight inch wheels around at 70 MPH. Those things are probably turning at a rate well over 100 MPH compared to your car/truck. They will not last at that speed. A tire or bearing failure, at that speed, will be catastrophic. :^

Re: Help update my trailer

That is not welding on this trailer -- its commonly referred to as "bird sh##". Cash strapped or not, save your money and buy a real trailer -- one that can be serviced with readily available parts. Spindles cannot be welded onto this beast because you'd have to butcher the trailing arms to get the old one out. Spindles cannot be "butt-welded". Alignment is the next problem. The fab shop doing the work does not work for free either and when they see this thing they will probably decline to work on it for potential legal reasons. If you happen to own a welder by all means go for it. Even doing a band-aid update will cost a fair amount of money that is far better spent on a better trailer. As for the reason for changing wheels, have you ever changed a tire on your car? You remove four or five lug nuts and the wheel comes off right? The hub stays on the car and that's where the bearings are. On this trailer, the hub and bearings are part of the wheel. Unless you have a complete wheel, tire, and bearing set with you, you are not able to change anything. As was mentioned, those old style wheels are not readily available. I'm outa here!

Re: Help update my trailer

yes I am awair how the bearing is on the wheel, thats why I want/wanted hubs. I mistook the comment as being as is, I need new wheels. right now I'm just thinking how I can make sure this thing last for a short period of time with little use.

I'm really appreciating all the help guys. I will be getting a spare wheel or two to get me by.

Re: Help update my trailer

plus the wench and such but yeah, I saw that trailer at my local store. I will pass on that one and cough up the extra dough to get the boat trailer from them. its not galvanized but cheap. I'll just have to wait until probably July to get it.

I'm going to finish painting this one, so I can get my boat to the local lake to see if it even leaks or not. lol

What I was getting at is that you can drag that old trailer around-locally. I would not get on the highway with it unless you put some serious thought/effort/money into it.

As it sits, it's probably worth $25.00 to someone to drag around their hobby farm behind a garden tractor.

Re: Help update my trailer

Well hey, as long as you can get a spare tire/wheel assy. for it, I'd just weld on a new coupler and call it good or leave it as is and just be sure to regularly check that coupler knob is tight while pulling the trailer.

Bond-o, I believe you lost the bet and owe him the $100. d:)

unlike the rest ...I wouldn't scrap it... take a peace of plywood and bolt it to the trailer wal la a yard trailer ...pull it behind your lawn mower.

Re: Help update my trailer

well, my trailer may be a piece to you guys, but its still my trailer and the only one I have so I do not want anyone to take it. When in need, thieves will take anything.

I guess You're Right.........

I Still don't like trailering a boat on Wheelbarrow tires......
And,...
Even with my:'( $100.bucks,........
Buying another Serviceable Boat Trailer would be Cheaper,+ Easier........
Than getting That 1,..... To a Serviceable Condition...........

Re: Help update my trailer

BLLDOGG,

In your original post here you asked about trailer bunks. My boat is similar to yours, a light 14 ft. utility and my bunks are ideal for me. They are two independent tilt bunks. Each one is a wood 2 x 4, 2 ft. long that pivot on a bracket in the center which is mounted to the frame. The tipped up 2" thickness side is the bearing surface and it's carpeted. This style distributes all weight evenly. It's important that the bunks are positioned far to the rear of the boat, best if the transon is on the bunk, because that is where most of the weight is. The bow and rest of the boat is on center rollers only. It's also important that the trailer should have springs to match the load, which is light.

This only picture shows my trailer, a 1968 SnowCo trailer that I bought new. It's all original, with 8 inch wheels, which I prefer and I can still keep the motor down when trailering. The advantage is it's low profile for launching in very shallow waters or on the ice (no water) like we do up north here, when pushing the boat to open water. Like I said on the Alumacraft forum, you will be amazed where and how you can use your boat.
