Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/tellAFriend,p,147,00.html
Got the engine out in one pcs. yesterday without any issues. Added some project Pics. to link also.

I think my next step is to make a template of the old engine bracket mount holes and stringer hieght. This is my biggest concern now.
I would like to fasten the bolts from the bottom up, but that would leave no room for error when placing the engine back into the boat. The old mounts had lag bolts with washers screwed into the wood from the top down. That seems a little weak to me.

Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/tellAFriend,p,147,00.html
Removed the stringer and it was wet right up to the transome. The transome is wet but not yet rotted, I am assuming that it is only wet around where the rotted stringer connected!!!! I'm going to place a heat lamp on the area to let it dry.

+++++ Any other ideas?

Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/tellAFriend,p,147,00.html
OK, If anyone is following along I just made and glassed new engine mount stringers. Added Pics. I hope to install this weekend put need to make sure everything is nice and dry.

Quick discovery, brought wood inside to glass and found if you lay down wax paper the it keeps the excess epoxy from sticking on the plywood bench or in this caes air hockey tabel. The wax paper peals from the wood easy.

Dang it got cold quick today, picked up some fast hardner WEST 205 27.5 Fl oz. They only charged me $ 9.95 after looking at the invoice? Think someone made a mistake?

Let me know what ya'll think about this project so far? Thanks!!!!

++++ Bondo, you were right, no problem lift'en out that engine, very simple. Total time 30min.

Pan-one,......
When you go into your Project Gallery,......
You need to post the url for Your Gallery,....... The 1 you posted gets me into Everybodies Galleries,......
That makes it Really Hard to Find your Boat....... Your Galley,......
The only difference between Your link,+ the 1 I posted is the (,00.html) at the end,.......
Mine brings you to Your Gallery,.....
Your link brings you to the shareaproject directory............

While Cherry wouldn't be My 1st Choice of Wood,........It lacks the Rot Resistence that Some Oaks have,.... It'll probably work just Fine........
I don't want to used LAG BOLTS to anchor in new mounts any ideas for a better system?
Why Not,..???....
About Every boat engine is held in-place with Lag Bolts,..........
Your's Would have Still been Holding Tight,.......
If the Wood hadn't Rotted Away...........

Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/tellAFriend,p,147,00.html

Here is another recent pic. got the stringers replaced and most of the glass work is done. I did a quick coat of oil base paint and looks goooood.

Did somthing real studip however By accident I cut into the steering ram unit with a recp.saw.
I did this while using a metal blade to cut the 4" rubber/steal ring enforced exhaust hose. I got a newer one on e-bay for only $62.00. Wow, now if only I can find 4" exhaust hose for less then $20.00 ft. Anybody have 3' section wanna sell?

I also had the idea to build a dry storage/ cooler into the deck a picture is posted. I have alot of wasted space under the deck so guess I'll use it. Even got some CPVC 1/2" pipe to install a capped drain that will flow into the builge. Will make sure I post some pics of this idea.

PS: I hate winter !!!!

Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

It's been awhile

Due to hunting and the weather it's been a slow go.
QUESTION: Foam, can I heat it in the cans then mix and pour in 40 Deg. temp.? Will it still expand to max. if I heat it prior to mixing? This is my major hold up!
Thanks.

IMHO, either put the boat in a heated garage (80 deg or better) or wait till it warms up outside. Your alternate methods won't work.

Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

I poured a floor inside of a tarp tent like yours and was very disappointed with how far that expensive foam went. You might try attaching another tarp over your hull, tying it down tightly and heating that space (tent within a tent) with your space heater. You can probably get it up to temp pretty quick and just duck in an out as you pour the foam.

Re: HELP ! Rotted Engine Mount Stringer

I need more EPOXY/RESIN and after ordering foam from U.S. Composite am thinking of try'en the fast hardner and resin they offer. WOW... It's alot cheaper than the WEST SYSTEM I've been using!

Would you guy recommend it or to stay with WEST!

I've got a little transome work and stringer work left to go. Then I will glass-in the floor.

Need you'r your advice...THANKS !
