help reqired as starter wont spin

I have been trying to repair a Johnson 60 elesm 1990 , it doesn't have a pullstart so I think i've ruined the starter when trying to get engine to crank , to test for compression etc. It was working , then the bendix didn't engage twice and then nothing.
I removed the starter , opened, cleaned brushes, magnets, anything basically to get rid of carbon. but when i put it back together nothing... even testing it directly from the battery didn't do any good.

Is the starter ruined or can i possibly do something else or do i fork out $$$ to get a pro to rebuild it ( don't like this option so if it can be avoided at all it will be , because the charge like crazy over here once it's anything to do with marine)

UPDATE:::::

looks like i put outer shell on upside down ( i am an idiot i know) so there's 3 hrs of my life i'll never get back... oh yeah starter runs like a dream in case anyone is wondering......

We are all idiots at one time or another. Sometimes I am an idiot for 2 people. Glad it worked out.

If wasting three hours in that manner is going to cause you any anguish, you probably should not be messing with outboard motors...

Unless you are a rare breed, it will happen again....nature of the beast(s)
