Hello All, I'm trying to put the outdrive back on my boat. Alpha One G1.

1989 Glastron Carlson 19CSS 5.7l Mercruiser Alpha One

Facts of the matter:
Drive was removed, and now needs to go back on.
Drive is stuck about 1" from being seated. Won't come off either. Tried prying from behind it, all sorts of other ideas, but it won't come off.
Have alignment tool, and could run it in with ease. Put grease on the end to see how evenly the splines were rubbing on it, and it was even all the way around.
Was putting outdrive on, and it won't go the last inch. Won't come off either. I ruined the new gasket trying to get it off, so now it HAS to come off.

Any ideas? I'm stuck........

Put the block of wood on top and use the rams to push it off but check for interference of shift mechanism first...

Is the shaft shaft wedged in there between drive and bell housing ? If it wasnt in fwd could have jammed it

Are the splines in the coupler damaged? Wonder if you have some burs in there that are seizing it up. How much grease was in the coupler from doing the alignment ? I have seen where a lot of grease build up in there can have no where to go when driveshaft goes into coupler

It's not on far enough to engage the shift mechanism, so I'm not worried about that.

Both units are in drive, boat and outdrive.

Not sure about the splines on the coupler. It's possible, but I didn't feel anything when I stuck my finger in there to put some grease in there. Maybe I put too much, but it doesn't explain why it won't come OFF.

I'll try that ram thing. I will have to hook that all back up, but it is what it is.

it could create a suction pulling the driveshaft out.

Wonder if the orings that go on the driveshaft are rolled. I had a ell of a time getting a drive on once when I forgot to lightly grease the oring that go in the gimbal bearing.

That's possible. It just won't come out. I'm starting to think maybe there is something up with the splines.

the splines usually get worn to a point but hard to think what is hanging it up based off what descr you gave would think the rams pushing back you can get it out

Once you get it off be sure to use some good rubber adhesive to seat the large sealing ring in the bell housing. And give the adhesive a few hours to cure.
To help installing the drive you want the drive to be supported in such a way that you do not have to lift it or if you have a engine hoist to hold it.
I have had a few that gave me problems at my shop when everything was in perfect alignment.
Sometimes the front “O” ring on the shaft catches the gimbal bearing and cocks it just enough and wedges itself in the bearing.

U may have to wiggle OD spline into coupler, if it is not shifter keyway issue. However, if you changed gimbal bearing, insert alignment tool and keep forcing it into couple while beating tool side to side to center bearing inside housing.
