Hello,

Yesterday while I was fishing, I stopped to troll a little bit. Once finished trolling I turned on my motor, put it in gear. Here is the tricky part when i put it in gear the engine reved up but the prop did not spin dead in the water with a running engine but no prop spin. Then I tried to put the throttle in reverse and it would not go into reverse just forwards but no prop spin. I am stumped. I looked at the forward and reverse cables coming from my engine and they looked fine not broken or coroded. I pulled off my throttle this morning and none of my throttle cables are broken or out of place. What could it be?

Re: Help no prop spin

is the motor an outboard, info about it would be helpful ... if so, remove the cowling and find where the shift cable connects .... have someone move the throttle forward and back and see what (if anything moves) ... also, can you turn the prop easily by hand .... post what you see

that kind of boat, what kind of throttle control?

did you disengage the gear for throttle only? some controls you press the button on the handle pivot, others you pull the handle toward you.

The motor is a 90 mercury outboard. I removed the cowling and where the shift cables connect it looks the same no damage nothing broken. My throttle is a quicksilver commander 3000 series. Yes I can turn the prop easily by hand.

Sounds like it could be the prop hub. Have you tried a different prop?

Re: Help no prop spin

No one last thing I disconnected the shift cables the one that makes the motor go forward and then the one that puts the motor in reverse. When I disconnected the reverse cable the throttle still would not go in reverse. So I figured it was a bad trottle shifter, so I disconnected the cable that makes it shift forward. Once I took off both cables my throttle shifter moves backwards now. So could it be something my shift cables?

You have two cables coming out of your control. A shift cable and a throttle cable. There are only 2 connections on the engine. One for shifting, one for throttle.
You do NOT have separate cables one for forward, one for reverse.
Is this a 2 stroke, 4 stroke, EFI or carbed motor?

Re: Help no prop spin

If the motor will shift into each position with the cable disconnected your trouble is with the cables or more likely the control itself. The botton for the fast idle could be stuck or the cams on the shaft are not turnning as they should. A manual for the motor should have the control box info in it and will be needed inorder to work on that control. JMO

Have you shifted the engine linkage after removing the cables to see if it shifts into fowards neutral and reverse? The prop should lock in both direstions when in reverse and spin freely both ways in neutral and in fowards the prop will click in one direction and lock in the other direction. This will eliminate the engine or shift shaft issues you might have. The check the cables for busted barrels and the shifter for worn or broken parts
