I am converting my 1999 25hp merc to remote steer from tiller.

I have most of it done but can not get the shifter to work right.

Ill try to explain it....

My remote has two levers in it (one for shifter, one for throttle), each lever has two spots where the cable can go. I followed the directions in the service manual for the engine and hooked up the shifter cable with the engine and remote in full reverse, set and locked it in place with the plastic barrels. The manual then tells you to check the shifting through all three gears, (reverse, neutral, and forward). It goes back to neutral fine but while trying to go to forward it just barley engages and the remtote seizes up and want move anymore. It goes in full reverse and neutral fine though.

If I switch what whole I connect the cable to on the shifter lever in the remote then it is the exact oppisite. It goes in full forward and neutral just fine, but gets stuck going to reverse.

I bought this kit used so I do not have the directions to the remote. Please someone tell me what stupid I am doing wrong!

Thanks in advance!

Re: HELP NEEDED w/ connecting remote throtle/shifter cables!!!

You may not have a problem at all. Most outboards that I am aware of have to have the engine running or you have to manually rotate the prop to get things lined up so that the engine will shift to reverse....the problem is the way the shift dog in the lower unit is made. It's a notch-socket kind of thing and the notch has to be lined up with the socket before the shift dog will move into the R position.

So, when you say that in the other hole it doesn't want to go into reverse, get some help and while one of you rotates the propeller the other one of you put slight pressure on the shift lever and see if it goes into gear.

If so, hook it up that way as that is how it should work.

Ok....

I got it all wired and hooked up and running.

With the engine cranked....
When I shift it to foward with the remote, it shifts the engine in reverse. So I swaped the shifter cable to the other arm inside the remote and it shifts to the right gear now (foward and revesre) but I have very little shifter movement in the remote when going into foward. The remgote only moves enough to engage the forward gear it stops before the it engages any throllte. I have full motion and throttle in revesre though.

Sorry to keep asking you for help, but this thing is just driving me crazy.
