That motor has Hydro-Electric shift. The first thing you need to do is check the voltages at the blue and green wires that go down to the lower unit. Bad push-button switches are VERY common.
The next thing you should do (well maybe first) is check or change the gear oil. Use only the special BRP Premium blend oil. The oil is the hydraulic fluid that does the shifting.
If everything checks out up to this point, you have a problem in the lower unit--probably a worn out reverse gear and clutch dog. Or, just plain crud and dirt in the oil pump from neglect/not changing the oil. You can not neglect these things and expect them to keep working.
